For those of you who have not been to the Inner Harbor Trolley Lane lately it
I want to thank the Ducks (amphibious bus tours) for eventually moving out of the Trolley Lane so it could be used by cyclists. We at Baltimore Spokes do hope the Ducks had a good season at their new location off of Light St. Again we want to thank the City for their strong support for cycling and their help in encouraging the Ducks to move and for working with Baltimore Spokes and the MayoroldId.20071214134946387

Yes finally 🙂 Many times I had to sneak into fast (well sometime not) moving traffic on the inner harbor because of people parked in the tram lane. I am glad to hear the city has kept its promise to convert the trolley lane into a safe place for biking.
And there is more to come as the Jones Falls comes through!
More is to come indeed. Eventually this will be part of the Jones Falls Trail and connect the existing JFT (Woodberry Light Rail Station through Druid Hill Park to Penn Station) to the Gwynns Falls Trail at the visitors’ center. Design is at about 60% and looks like a quality job, but construction will probably not start until late 2008 and take about a year. In the meantime, along with the storm-grates, signs, and striping already done, more is to come, namely:
* extending the stripe all the way to the Powerplant, with more bike logos on the pavement.
* signs warning motorists of cyclists to their right
* signs warning cyclists of vehicle and pedestrian conflicts ahead (although I could not get the exact wording I favored: "Caution – Idiot Pedestrians Crossing")
* bollards to block motor vehicle access! OK, they are not metal or concrete, just plastic tubes to allow access by emergency vehicles, and will probably be driven over by the fedex trucks and center-of-the-universe SUV’s, but it should at least cut down on intrusion and make enforcement easier.
To be more specific with the thanks, kudos go to:
– Mayor Dixon, our biking Mayor, for her support. By the way, have you noticed how "Operation Orange Cone" has improved the pavement of many of our cycling routes? Ridden lower Guilford Avenue lately?
– Eva Khoury, the bike/ped coordinator, for shepherding this through. It must have seemed like playing Whack-a-Mole.
– Al Foxx, Tony Wallnofer and the folks at Baltimore DOT
– Public Works Dept (the personnel changed so often over there I don’t have a name),
– Colin Tarbert and the new leadership at the BDC/Inner Harbor Task Force, who have been very supportive of improving the cycling climate, and lastly but not leastly,
– The cycling community of Baltimore for maintaining the constant pressure on the city. See what you can do?
No particular thanks to the Ducks, who were dragged kicking and screaming from their blockade of the Trolley Lane, insisting that the move to the Visitors’ Center would cause them to go bankrupt and/or leave the city. They seem to be doing fine.
A word/letter/email of thanks to those mentioned above might be nice, and would probably facilitate further improvement.
