Tell DNR not to sell water from state lands

The Department of Natural Resources wants to sell water from state parks to private developers. These waters sustain the environment around them and should be kept in reserve for emergencies, not sold to the highest bidder.
Email Ronald Guns, the Deputy Secretary of the Department of Natural Resources, and tell him that state waters should only be used for emergencies and that any policy to allow the sale of state waters must allow public input in the process.

Hit & run on Route 28 – Monocacy Bridge

This is from the Potomac Peddlers list serve if you have any information please let us know.
I am writing this on my behalf of my father, Dwight McNeill, an active biker in the Maryland area. My father was hit on his bike by a pick up truck carrying a horse trailer on Saturday, July 22nd, at approximately 8:00am. The accident occurred on Route 28 North just over the Dickerson/Frederick line and before the Monocacy bridge. The truck did NOT stop and was presumably on its way to the Maryland Horse Trials at Loch Moy Farm. My father has three broken vertebrae, a broken scapula and is covered in bruises and black and blues. He was transferred to a rehab center today where he will learn to walk again and care for himself independently. If you have any information or know of someone who does, my family would be greatly appreciative. Thank you!

Are Cyclists Destroying the Earth?

In case you have not read or heard about the New York Times article about the paper by Karl Ulrich and the rebuttal by Andrew Leonard; Leonard summaries Ulrich position as "Cyclists live longer, thus consuming more energy, bad for environment. Result: Bikers lose all will to live." And Paul Higgins position as "Cyclists aren’t fat, thus lower healthcare costs, providing money for carbon abatement. Result: Bikers save the world."

More Cars = More Climate Change = More Katrinas

This came over one of the lists so I thought I would post it. I have no idea if our Critical Mass is joining in on this but the theme certainly fits within Critical Mass. (Critical Mass meets on the last Friday of the month at the corner of Redwood and Charles St (one block north of Lombard, near the Charles center metro stop.) Meet around 5pm and ride before 6pm.)

Join the direct action movement for climate protection and…

Join the August 25th Katrina Anniversary Critical Mass!

Last Friday in August: Critical Mass for Climate Justice on Hurricane Katrina Anniversary!

August 25th marks the 1-year anniversary Katrina reaching hurricane strength. In the days that followed the storm would strengthen rapidly over an unnaturally warm Gulf of Mexico, ultimately striking the coast and leaving thousands dead and homeless, victims of an uncaring government, centuries of racism, and an ever more chaotic global climate.

This year, let’s take to the streets with a reminder that the tragedy in the Gulf continues and a demand that it never be repeated.

Get ready for a Critical Mass for Climate Justice on August 25th in your town!

Why Critical Mass? Car Culture, Oil, and Environmental Injustice

Critical Mass is a celebration of bike culture, a meaningful alternative to car culture and greenhouse gas generating fossil fuels.
