Cyclists like push for safety in bill

CRITICS SAY PROPOSED BUFFER WILL PUT DRIVERS IN HARM’S WAY
By Edwin Garcia – MediaNews Sacramento Bureau

“It says if a driver passes you close, and there’s a police car nearby, they can pull them over,” said d’Souza, who rides 70 miles a week and advises the city of San Jose on bicycle issues for the task force studying development in Coyote Valley. “It’s a step in the right direction.”
The measure is gaining traction among serious cyclists and also parents whose children ride bikes to school. Still, it faces an uphill climb from the same forces that helped defeat Nava’s similar bill last year.

Critics’ concerns
Opponents, including the Teamsters Union, worry that drivers forced to swerve around cyclists would place themselves on a collision course with oncoming traffic, especially on narrow roads.

The City That Never Walks

By ROBERT SULLIVAN – The New York Times
FOR the past two decades, New York has been an inspiration to other American cities looking to revive themselves. Yes, New York had a lot of crime, but somehow it also still had neighborhoods, and a core that had never been completely abandoned to the car. Lately, though, as far as pedestrian issues go, New York is acting more like the rest of America, and the rest of America is acting more like the once-inspiring New York.

And yet, here in New York, we even have the debate over bicycle traffic backwards. We focus on drivers

Help stop global warming now

From Environment Maryland:

With scientific evidence pouring in, even President Bush last week acknowledged
the dangers of global warming in the State of the Union address. The facts are
that we need to take action now to prevent the worst effects of global warming:
New Orleans-like flooding of coastal cities, chronic drought caused by declining
rainfall, and more and more destructive hurricanes.

Global warming is the challenge of our generation, and we owe it to future
generations to take action. Your representative has the opportunity to do just that
by cosponsoring the Safe Climate Act, a science-based measure that would reduce
global warming pollution by 80% over the next half century.

Please sign our Stopping Global Warming Pollution petition, which urges your
representative to tackle global warming by cosponsoring the Safe Climate Act.
Then, ask your friends and family to help by forwarding this email on to them.

We will be focusing on small part sorting and organizing bikes. We will also be building bikes that are inexpensive and close to being ready to go, which we will be giving away.

This is a great time to rack up volunteer hours that can be used use towards co-op membership and parts, and there will be refreshments served. Everyone and anyone is welcome!! From making signs, sweeping, and sorting parts, to moving bikes, there is plenty for everyone to do, and we can use all the help we can get!!!

The Road Code

Note due to the size of this article it will be continued in comments.

Montgomery County Council recently introduced a sweeping change in its road code. While it had many good intentions it failed to meet those intentions. The following comments are a worthwhile read for any transportation planning as well as any environmentalist who would like to see the transportation network more environmentally friendly.

Key in; ignition on; brain off!

Angela Atwood-Moore response on MoBike forum:
"Some" motorists turn off their brains when driving? I would say "most" and even that is generous! And the real problem with these over-speed passes is that in my experience, they usually occur before the driver intends to cross railroad tracks, go down a hill with speed bumps, roll through a residential street/neighborhood, make a right hand turn in front of me, or before we both have to stop at a red light/stop-sign: making all these types of over-speed passes COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY!Key in; ignition on; brain off!
