New York vs Baltimore in bike safety

This came as a bit of a shock to me, side by side comparison of Baltimore (city,) Baltimore County, Anne Arundel County and New York city. To the left in orange are the cycling injury rates per million population and to the right in red is the cycling death rate per million population.

Notes:
New York is shown with white variant.
Baltimore had no cycling deaths in 2004

  1. I’m not surprised. I cycled through a large portion of NYC while on tour in May, and I ride to work in Baltimore 5-6 days a week. It’s a world of difference; It seems to me that cyclists are just so uncommon in Baltimore motorists don’t have experience dealing with us. I’d be interested to see how Philly stacks up against these two, with its broad network of bike lanes.
