Points:
- This bill supports the ability for bicyclists
to ride on the roadway when there is a bike lane or shoulder; 43 other
states already allow bicyclists to ride on the roadway.
- The bill also modifies the equipment
requirements required under State law, including strengthening the
braking provisions, allowing rear lights that can act as a reflector,
and allowing operation of bicycles and motors scooters without a bike
bell.

MDOT opposes repeal of mandatory shoulder use by cyclists for safety reasons? That’s a laugh. Statistics show that one of the leading causes of bike accidents is DEBRIS. Debris is found almost exclusively on shoulders. Requiring cyclists to ride where there is a known hazard is CRIMINAL. Almost no bike accidents occur because a cyclist was riding continuously in a regular travel lane. The dangers are at intersections (with other roads/driveways) and when cyclists suddenly ‘swerve’ (in the words of the motorist) into the travel lane from the shoulder (to avoid DEBRIS, parked cars, etc.).
MDOT doesn’t know squat about safe cycling. They only care about getting cyclists "out of the way" so they can drive to their MDOT jobs more quickly. Except that, it’s not really hordes of bicyclists holding them up every morning and evening on their commutes, is it? It’s hordes of other drivers in single-occupant SUVs.
