Van hits and kills 5-year-old boy riding bycicle

This is in Florida but still …
"At this point, I don’t see anything that would lead us to charge anybody but it’s still pretty early in the investigation,” Captain Rocco said.
Is this standard police training across the US? It’s like saying: Don’t worry it’s just another necessary death to accommodate motor vehicle travel. WTF?

It’s a shame that such a residential street a driver can get away with killing a child.oldId.20110312212855437

  1. "B’ Spokes" I take it all your knowledge of police investigations comes from watching TV shows. A 5 year old dies and all you can do is use the opportunity to bash police. You must be a dope smoking cop hater to come up with such stupid assumptions.
I have a four year old and I would never let him ride in the street, but a lot of parents either don’t care or lack the brain power to keep an eye their children. Most cases like this are usually because a child of that age has no grasp that a one ton vehicle traveling the speed limit can’t stop on a dime and will in fact kill them. Children commonly ride into on coming traffic and are struck at no fault of the driver. If an investigator concludes through physical evidence and eye witness testimony that a child rode into the path of a moving vehicle and that the driver was no intoxicated or driving reckless, then no charges are filed.
Now if the driver was speeding, drunk, etc.. then he would be charged.
If you think a police officer responds to call and concludes that "no charges will be filed" in an attempt to "accommodate motor vehicle traffic", then you are out of your mind!
I have held a lifeless child and there is no greater scar that you can carry than to remember the weight of that precious lifeless body, and to witness the life shattering grief that the parent go through. Trust me, if someone has broken the law and caused the death of a child, I promise you there is no police officer that wouldn’t give his all to arrest them and see that they are prosecuted.
So next time try to "THINK" before you use such a tragedy to bash police officers.

  2. Shakyjake, the problem is not with this individual police officer it’s with our society. We value the right to drive fast and mindlessly on our streets more than we value the right of our citizens and our children to use the streets. There is no apparent reason this child should have been hit and killed. And the fact the driver of the van didn’t even realize he’d hit a child until someone yelled at him points to inattentive and/or distracted driving, which is tantamount to DUI. I’m sure the responsible agency will do their job according to the rules and procedures they are required to live by. However, all too often drivers kill pedestrians and bicyclists and get off virtually scot free. If there were laws that made injuring or killing a vulnerable street user a serious crime, drivers would pay much more attention when those users were around.
I’m very sorry you feel your child can’t ride in the street. I don’t know what kind of street you live on, but if you lived where this child lived and he weren’t allowed to ride on the street, your child would not have the freedom children need. We need laws to protect your child so he can enjoy his childhood, not live in fear.
