Maryland Rear End Car Accidents

In Maryland, rear-end accidents are the most common type of automobile accident reported. In fact, incredibly, for every 100 miles traveled within the state of Maryland there are approximately 27 rear-end accidents reported. Most are harmless and do not cause any injury. But it is still an incredible statistic.

  1. Incredible, indeed. Car accidents are a serious problem, but it can’t possibly be true that there are 27 rear-end accidents per 100 miles driven. That would mean that someone with a 20-mile round-trip commute would average 5 rear-enders *per day*.

  2. that sounds crazy, but then 1/2 of all car trips are 3 miles or less, and most accidents happen at the very beginning or end of the trip, so if you make lots of short trips that must raise your odds compared to one 100 mile trip.

  3. I’m sure the odds are higher for shorter trips than for longer drives on the Interstate. Even so, if the 100 mile trips don’t have rear end collisions every 3-4 miles, this alleged average would mean that local trips have rear end collisions much more frequently than every 3-4 miles traveled.
Note this report doesn’t include other types of collisions – they would be in addition to the rear end collisions.
I’m incredibly skeptical drivers in MD or any other state average a collision every 3-4 miles traveled, let alone just for rear end collisions. I think(hope) the author is more skilled in law than in statistics.
