  1. Baltimore’s Newest Bike Shop Promises Something New for Cycling Community

    Baltimore, Maryland – December 14th, 2008 – Baltimore’s newest bicycle shop,
Baltimore Bicycle Works, promises to bring a fresh perspective on what an
urban cycling shop should be. BBW offers cyclists a full service retail
store and repair shop right in the heart of the city. Located in the Station
North Cultural Arts District of Baltimore on the Jones Falls Trail BBW
caters to all types of cyclists from beginners to professionals; children to
adults. Commuters, road cyclists, mountain bikers, BMX riders, fixed-gear
enthusiasts and others will all find something to love at Baltimore Bicycle
    Works.

The shop differentiates itself from the pack in a number of ways. “We try to
select products that reflect our desire to live in a more environmentally
sustainable and socially conscious manner,” says Tommy Nash, BBW
worker-member. “Choosing products made in the United States from recycled
and organic materials when available is a small but meaningful decision.”

The enterprise is also structured in a way that sets it apart from other
bike shops. At Baltimore Bicycle Works each worker is an owner and will
benefit directly from the success of the business. “No one here is anyone
else’s boss, we all work together and together we hope to reap the benefits
of that hard work”, says Lindsey Meisinger. The founding members of BBW
believe that their cooperative structure will allow them to attract the
highest quality bicycle industry workers in the area.

The shop also offers a full range of bike repair and maintenance services
and, through the partnership with Nash Cycles, BBW offers customers custom
steel bicycle frames. “Having in-house frame building capabilities gives our
customers the opportunity to purchase a bicycle made to their
specifications,” says Meredith Mitchell, another worker-member.
“Additionally, we hope to use these resources to develop our own in-house
line of bicycles that will have the same artesian feel and design of a
custom bike without the price tag.”

The worker-members at Baltimore Bicycle Works believe simple act of riding a
bike can make a significant difference in how a person relates to the world.
“We are making a bet that a city with more bicycle riders will be a happier,
cleaner, safer, and more vibrant city,” says Tommy Nash.
