No New Nukes

On July 17, Maryland PIRG released a new report showing that clean energy is a faster, cheaper, safer, and more reliable choice to power Maryland’s energy future than nuclear power.
The report comes in advance of Public Service Commission hearings in August at which the Commission will gather public input about the proposed nuclear reactor.
Maryland PIRG and the Chesapeake Safe Energy Coalition are hosting an open meeting on August 12 in Baltimore to collect public comments that will be entered into the PSC record.

Overview
In October 2006, Constellation Energy announced plans to build the nation’s largest nuclear power plant in southern Maryland.
Nuclear power is a poor solution to Maryland’s energy and global warming problems. Not only is nuclear power extremely expensive, but it also poses threats to public safety and the environment.
Maryland PIRG is working to stop the construction of a new nuclear reactor in Maryland and is advocating for safer and more affordable alternatives.

  2. Good question. My reasoning has the following components (not in any order.):

    • In general this topic “Health & Environment” is to attract fringe bicyclists (environmentalists) to the site and to inform cyclists about (some) environmental issues to help create more comradery between the two groups.
    • A response to Patrick McHenry’s speech that nuclear power is the answer to the “problem at the pump.” (i.e. He started it by saying nuclear power is transportation related. :p 😉 )
    • Personally I think there is something related to stressing alternate transportation like bikes and stressing alternate electric power sources but as you don’t have to be anti-car to be pro bike and similarly I don’t think one needs to be anti-nuke to be an pro alternate energy.
