Google offers bikes to workers

The Guardian in the UK is repoting that Google is offering employees 2000 bikes and Helmets. The bikes and helmets will be branded with the google logo. How about it Constellation Energy, T Rowe Price, Black and Decker, and Legg Mason, how about offering your employees to bikes so they can get to work?

Personally I would love on the folding bikes so I can take it on the DC Metro during rush hour.

Cars By the Numbers

From Environmental Defense:

In a time when Fortune 500 companies and four major automakers (GM, Ford, Toyota and DaimlerChrysler) have announced their support for a cap on global warming emissions, it’s clear that momentum is shifting.

Did you know that U.S. cars and light trucks emit 333 million tons of carbon dioxide each year? That’s more than 20 percent of our nation’s global warming pollution! Yet, average fuel efficiency has not changed in 10 years. [In fact it has gone down!]

Car companies can do more and the time for action is now.

Check out our list of facts on cars and global warming. Then, take action in support of national global warming action!

Could we bring a bicycle rental bus shetlers to Baltimore?

WashCycle has a post about DC squandering it’s lead to institute a computerized bicycle rental plan.

One of my pet hates about living in Baltimore is the lack of coordination between mass transit systems. Northern VA has the right idea they run a hub and spoke architecture, where the metro stations are the major hubs and the buses feed out into the neighborhoods.

Since MTA doesn’t seem to be able to set up a hub and spoke system for Baltimore maybe the city could bypass MTA and drop in a computerized bicycle rental program at key locations hooked up to the swipe cards used on the MTA buses.

This would allow you to jump on the MARC stop at Camden Yards, swipe your Smart Trip Card to get a bike, bike to the ESPN Zone/Fells Point/Canton, lock up the bike, then repeat it all again on the way home. No need to worry about taking a bike on the train during rush hour.

Some important dates to remember:

History of the Bicycle Talk at Velocipede

Sam Fitzsimmons, an antique bicycle dealer, will be at Velocipede tomorrow night (Tuesday, march 13th) from 7-9 to talk about the invention of the bicycle and the impact it had on society especially during the Industrial Revolution.

He will be bringing some turn of the century examples to oggle as well. Too cool to miss!!!!

Hope to see you all there!!!!
