Smart Growth Advocates Prepare for Battle
Annapolis – Advocates from 1000 Friends of Maryland are ready for a fight this legislative session. The enemy? The high costs and increased pollution from sprawling development.
“We must stop sprawling into our rural lands. This development costs taxpayers money, paves over farmland and open spaces, and adds even more pollution to local waters,” explained Dru Schmidt-Perkins, Executive Director of 1000 Friends of Maryland.

Freedom Bike and Walking Trail Discussion
By Valerie Bonk, Patch
The second meeting in Carroll County’s discussion of bike and walking trails in the Freedom Area was a little quieter than the first meeting in October, where a heated argument broke out over a local resident’s individual efforts to create a trail without approval.
Thursday’s discussion at the South Carroll Senior Center was all about moving on.
A smaller group of 30 people, compared to the more than 70 that showed up in October, were led in a discussion by Carroll County Recreation and Parks Administrator Jeff Degitz who made sure to those in attendance that this was "starting over" for the trail idea in Southern Carroll County.
“There was a line on a map before, but there is not a line anymore,” said Degitz. “While I applaud that individual effort, we do come here tonight without a line on a map. That line now comes from you. We come here tonight with a clean slate.”

Injuries/Condition: Critical, unstable condition
Synopsis:
On July 14, 2011, at approximately 7:32 a.m., an individual was legally operating his
bicycle northbound on Crain Highway near Georgia Avenue when an unknown gray vehicle,
possibly a Chevy or Saturn, traveling north on Crain Highway struck the rear of the bicycle. The
operator of the vehicle failed to remain on the scene and was witnessed continuing northbound on
Crain Highway at a high rate of speed. The victim was transported by ambulance to the
University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, where he was listed in critical, unstable condition.
The suspect vehicle was described as a small Chevy or Saturn sedan, gray in color with
damage to the right front headlight area and windshield. The operator was described as a white
male with a beard, wearing wire-rimmed glasses and a baseball cap.
UPDATE:
On July 18, 2011, a citizen’s report to check an occupied vehicle located in the parking lot
of the Walmart located at 407 George Clauss Boulevard was dispatched to Western District
officers. Officers arrived and observed damage consistent with a lookout given for a hit and run
vehicle from the above collision. Officers identified and made contact with the owner, John
Harrison Correlli, 57, of 6739 Brookmont Drive in Baltimore, Maryland.
The suspect vehicle, a 2005 silver Chevy Cobalt, which was registered to Mr. Correlli,
was towed to Police Headquarters. A search warrant was obtained for the vehicle and Evidence
Collection Technicians recovered a ball cap, wire framed glasses and a sample of suspected DNA
evidence from the vehicle. The evidence was subsequently compared to the victim Marco Garcia.
On December 29, 2011, the DNA test results were received and showed a positive match
indicating this was the vehicle that struck Mr. Garcia.
On January 18, 2012, John Harrison Correlli was charged with several traffic violations to
include the following: failure of a vehicle driver to pass safely at a distance of at least three feet
when overtaking a bicycle, leaving the scene of a collision that caused serious bodily injury with
out rendering aid, failure to remain on the scene of a collision, negligent driving, failure to return
to the scene and failure to exercise care to avoid the collision with the bicycle.

When shops and services are within walking distance, we walk more and drive less
by Kaid Benfield
New research from Southern California has found that residents of neighborhoods with a central core of shops and services – a pattern typically found in older, traditional communities – walk nearly three times more often than do residents of neighborhoods whose nearest shops and services lie along a major arterial roadway – a pattern typically found in newer suburban development. Residents of traditionally styled and centered neighborhoods also drive less than their counterparts residing in the newer pattern.
This is true even when the data are controlled for individual and household economic and demographic characteristics. The study was led by Marlon Boarnet of the University of California at Irvine, assisted by several other researchers from southern California, Texas A&M, and UNC-Chapel Hill. It is published in the Fall 2011 issue of Access, the magazine of the University of California Transportation Center.

Tim Johnson’s Ride on Washington

This winter, six-time national champion and cyclo-cross superstar Tim Johnson will throw his leg over his bike for a hard week of training. But he’s not riding to improve his cycling; he’s riding to improve your cycling.
Tim Johnson will ride to raise funds and awareness for the Bikes Belong Foundation as he pedals 500 miles from Boston to Washington DC, the site of the National Bike Summit, in five days.
Starting Friday, March 16, Tim will be joined by long time cycling journalist, advocate, promoter and announcer Richard Fries, and 20 other leaders of American bike culture. Leaving from Boston, they will ride every day, hitting Providence, Hartford, New York City, Trenton, Philadelphia, Wilmington, and Baltimore, until they reach Washington, D.C. on Tuesday, March 20, for the start of the National Bike Summit.
“We want to engage governors, mayors, bloggers, reporters, schools, and most of all other cyclists along the way,” said Johnson, who is already building support from the bike industry for this mission.
Tim Johnson hopes to see this event raise funds and awareness for Bikes Belong and the National Bike Summit. Your support will be critical to make that happen. Visit our website to learn more about the 2012 Tim Johnson’s Ride on Washington.
Ride With Us
You can ride with us for five minutes, five miles, or all five days. When you register, we will create a personal fundraising page for you on PledgeReg, where you can raise money to benefit Bikes Belong. We will post the exact routes as we get closer to the ride. Please note that although we will have neutral support along the way to help all riders, individuals looking to join will be required to take care of their own logistics.
The final 10 miles of the ride to D.C. will be a giant bike parade where anyone can join—no spandex required. We will ride past 15 Capital Bikeshare Stations so that anyone can grab a bike and join us. The ride will end with a celebration on Capitol Hill.
Donate
If you can’t ride with us, visit PledgeReg and donate to one of the dedicated riders doing the event. The goal of this ride is to raise $100,000 for Bikes Belong. The funding we raise will leverage government funding for bike paths, bike lanes, bike facilities and bike programs. No other donation you make could make such a huge impact for America’s health, environment, and quality of life.
