The new Velocipede Bike Project and The High Zero festival of improvised music are riding tandem.

On Tuesday, September 5th at noon, there will be a concert at the
Velocipede Bike project (Lanvale and Charles sts.) of bicycle and
modified bicycle instruments. The concert is part of an ongoing series
of site-specific music events coinciding with the High Zero festival.

The band will consist of local electronic musician and Velocipede
member, Michael Muniak on bicycle; Philadelphia musican and
deep-thinker, Michael Anton Parker on bicycle; and Baltimore
experimental musician Dan Breen on (you guessed it), bicycle. Parker’s
bike is modified for sound making and Breen will be playing a complex
instrument created by local musical instrument inventer, Neil Feather.

This should be a mysterious and beautiful affair.

Lanvale and Charles sts.

Bikes and politics

Primaries are less then two weeks away and if you have not contacted your candidate of choice and let them know of your support and that you are a cyclist please do so. One person well connected with their elected official can make a difference. So imagine what a bunch of people united in a cause can do.

And that is why I am writing, if we group together we can make a huge difference. Due to tax code status, bike clubs and organizations are limited what they can do politically so it is up to us as individuals to make the difference, and we can if we act as a group!

So if you have some time to help out or if you have some money to donate to help promote cycling then read on.

Cyclists and Politics

This story from Montgomery County shows just how well cyclists and politicians can work together:

Starting about 8 months ago, Steve Silverman (Montgomery County Executive) arranged a meeting with cyclists, asked us for our priorities, advised us on strategy, had his staff collaborate with us, introduced proposals on our behalf and backed us up at almost every opportunity. Even after the bike-friendly T&E committee had added funds for bike projects, Steve asked for more funding before the full council, leading council members to joke about his being in the pocket of cyclists. As a result of efforts by Silverman and members of the T&E committee (and of course bike advocates and volunteers like you), the huge bike budget cuts proposed by Duncan were reversed AND we got significant extra funding for the DPWT bikeways program, signage, shoulder/bike lane sweeping, CCT maintenance and other efforts. It’s been a great year.

One of the best and most visible ways to help candidates is to provide human support – i.e. volunteering. By showing up en masse to help at a campaign effort or event, you send the candidate a very clear yet positive message, and of course you help him/her to get elected. So Steve has asked me to ask a group of you to volunteer for his campaign one evening in August.

So on August 28th approximately 8 cyclists road from NIH to Silverman campaign office to do phone banking.

Join 1500 Riders at the Civil War Century

Join the BBC in Thurmont, Maryland again this year for the cycling event that has everything — famous historical sites, breathtaking scenery, low-traffic roads, and well-marked routes designed for every ability level. As in the past, you can visit the South Mountain and Antietam or Gettysburg battlefield sites — or all three of them if you elect to ride the full century — while cycling through some of the most beautiful countryside east of the Mississippi.
105M, 77M, 62M, 50M, 25M. 5th year for event; The two longer rides are moderately hilly-to-hilly, with 7400 and 6400 feet of climb, respectively; the shorter rides flat-to-rolling.
