Maryland State Senator Brian Frosh wants to stop red light ticket profits for camera vendors

B’ Spokes: Discussions around red light cameras has always been "interesting." Those who are against red light cameras claim they are just a revenue grabbing scam as if every thing the government does should lose money. But the problem in the referenced article is "they simply could not afford the cameras if they had to pay rent or a flat fee."
Well here are a couple of my ideas:
1) Raise the fine.
2) Lower the tolerance from 12 mph over the speed limit to 7 mph or even 2 or 3 mph.
I’ll note driving in Arizona I am amazed how many do exactly the speed limit even in 15 mph school zones. There is a culture of traffic law enforcement in Arizona that Maryland just does not have. Spotting a patrol car in Maryland was a lot less frequent then here in Arizona, not to mention a lot of automated enforcement in Arizona. It is also worth noting Arizona’s percentage of traffic fatalities that are pedestrians is 14.1%, lower then Maryland’s 20.8%.

Obama Plans to Name Close Aide on National Security as Chief of Staff

B’ Spokes: Now you might be wondering why I am sharing this, well…

He is also a relentless defender of Mr. Obama, as reporters on the receiving end of angry e-mails or phone calls from him can attest. His blasts have sometimes been delivered during his nightly bike ride home to Takoma Park, Md., where he lives with his wife and three children. (After scrapes with motorists, he now mostly drives.)

Now I have to ask if someone like this gets intimidated by Maryland’s motorists what hope do women and kids have? This is one reason why I am involved in advocacy, enough with the mean motorists.

For many, biking is the sane way to get to inauguration

If you ever had any thoughts about being in DC for any major event, biking through DC while traffic is a near standstill is just awesome! Not to mention participating in the events themselves.
A bike route from Baltimore to DC: https://bikewashington.org/routes/dc2balt/index.htm
I’ll note the above site has other "invasion" routes to DC if you happen to live somewhere else near DC.
The inauguration is Monday, January 21. https://dc.about.com/od/specialevents/a/Presidential-Inauguration-2013-Washington-Dc.htm

Support Maryland’s Bottle Bill

Support Maryland's Bottle Bill

Beverage containers make up nearly 25% of the trash in Baltimore’s streams, rivers, and Harbor.

And even though Baltimore City spends more than $10 million dollars each year cleaning up trash, bottles and cans continue to make our waterways dangerous for children and wildlife.

Now, the Maryland legislature is considering a new  bill that will make a real and positive difference in reducing Baltimore’s trash problem.

They need to know you support them!

Grade separated crossings

I ran across this project list from the city of Tempe and just look at all the grade separated crossings they plan to do! So much better then blaming the cyclists when they get hit trying to cross a road on the trail or crazy speed bumps or "cattle guards" or just "walk the bike" signs as they do on some Maryland trails.
I will also note I love the fact they also show which projects were completed from the last long range plan which is a lovely reporting feature, to bad Maryland is so archaic in it’s reporting.

On Cycling: What cyclists see right of the line

image

So vehicle operators large and small, if you wanted to know why bicycle riders tend to not ride on the shoulders of our roads to the right of the white line or if one bicyclist seemingly erratically/suddenly shifts left into a vehicle lane, please remember the hazards in the photo and remember that Arizona law doesn’t require cyclists to ride to the right of that white line if confronted with hazardous conditions. You have now seen up close that there are many hazards in their part of Arizona’s roads.
