Rider accident at CWC ISO witnesses

My father, Hugh Macintosh, was the rider hit by the pickup truck during the Civil War Century ride. His name is Hugh Macintosh and he rides with the Baltimore Bicycling Club. The accident happened around mile 70 on the downhill portion of Jacks Mountain Road . We are trying to piece together the incident and would appreciate if any eye-witnesses can contact the police at (717) 334-8111.
He is making progress and we are very hopeful considering the extent of his injuries. Thanks for pulling for him

Join 1500 Riders at the Civil War Century

Join the BBC in Thurmont, Maryland again this year for the cycling event that has everything — famous historical sites, breathtaking scenery, low-traffic roads, and well-marked routes designed for every ability level. As in the past, you can visit the South Mountain and Antietam or Gettysburg battlefield sites — or all three of them if you elect to ride the full century — while cycling through some of the most beautiful countryside east of the Mississippi.
NOTE: Registration and check-in for pre-registered riders begins at 7 a.m.
A ride for everyone: We offer five rides ranging from long and mountainous to short and flat. All routes are well marked and cue sheets are provided.

Alert! Respond to U.S. Transportation Secretary’s comments on PBS

Peters cited “bicycle paths” as a prime example of the waste

Last night on the PBS NewsHour with Jim Leher, DOT Secretary Mary Peters was interviewed by Gwen Ifill.

Peters, when asked about a possible gas tax increase, repeated President Bush’s response – No, there can be no tax increase because Congress is wasting the money they already get. Peters cited “bicycle paths” as a prime example of the waste because bicycles are not a transportation use of the gas tax money.

It is disappointing that the administration is attacking Jim Oberstar for his efforts to get the Minneapolis bridge repaired along with raising all the funding for transportation maintenance, by using Oberstar’s support for bicycles as a weapon.

The League of American Bicyclists feels strongly that this should not go without a response and we have sent a letter to Secretary Peters voicing our view. Click here to view our response.

New Md Bicycle Map Available

Yes, the new Bicycle Map has arrived. I picked up
a copy at the Monkton NCR Station, open Wed – Sunday.
This new comprehensive map provides guidance for long
distance cyclists travelling in Md; utilizing main
roads with shoulders (e.g. – Route 140 from
Westminster to Emmitsburg), bike trails like the NCR,
and local roads like Butler Road – RT 128 – and Falls
Rd – RT 25. Although bicycle connoisseurs familiar
with the local area may find more interesting, less
travelled roads; this map provides a practical and
continuous route – except for the Bay Bridge – for
cycling through Md.

This comprehensive bike map further strengthens
our case in requesting State Highway to maintain and
improve the routes listed on the map. Last, but not
least, the State has removed from its prohibited
highways the non Freeway portion (north of Route 26)
of divided Route 15 in Frederick County and most of
Route 301 in Queen Annes and Kent counties.
