Pre-Session Annapolis Report by Jon Cardin

Again this session, I will revisit the issue of bicycle safety and our efforts to improve both Maryland’s roads for bicyclists and Maryland’s reputation for bike friendliness. In spite of the significant efforts made to encourage drivers and bicyclists to share the road including my “three foot” legislation, I learn of more and more accidents where cyclists are seriously hurt. As the number of cyclists commuting or riding for recreation continues to expand at exciting rates, I will be seeking to clarify laws and policy initiatives aimed at safety and expansion of bicycling options for Marylanders.

Energy Plan

President Obama: “My plan will continue to reduce the carbon pollution that is heating our planet. Because climate change is not a hoax.”

Romney: “There remains a lack of scientific consensus on the issue . . .and I believe we must support continued debate and investigation within the scientific community.”

Republican Platform Opposes Agenda 21

By LESLIE KAUFMAN, New York Times

“We strongly reject the U.N. Agenda 21 as erosive of American sovereignty, and we oppose any form of U.N. Global Tax,” the platform reads.

In a New York Times article in February written with my colleague, Kate Zernike, we reported about activists aligned with the Tea Party disrupting local city and state land use planning meetings nationwide to denounce sustainable efforts to reduce energy use — including bike lanes on public streets and smart meters on home appliances. The activists see such community projects as the first steps in a plan to limit individual rights.

Dukakis To Transportation Nation: You Were “Dead Wrong” on Romney and Infrastructure

“You were dead wrong. When Romney left the governorship, the state was a wreck– rusting bridges, potholed roads, a great transit system that had serious financial problems he refused to fix, and a pathetic inability to get anything done. Projects that should have taken months took years, and his ” fix it first” program was a joke.”

Update:
To be fair I found this positive spin:

"Still, Romney’s resistance to building lots of new transit infrastructure may be an indicator of exactly the kind of fix-it-first mentality he’s known for — and a sign that crumbling infrastructure was, indeed, a major concern of his. After all, Boston has the oldest transit system in the country, with badly deteriorating infrastructure. Former Boston transportation official Ted Brown says it was “admirable ” that Romney gave capital projects a back seat to focus on maintenance."
