Americans pursuing fitness well into retirement
Living to 80 or 90 is one thing. But blowing through those benchmarks at full speed on a bike, in the pool or in running shoes is quite another.

Cars By the Numbers
From Environmental Defense:
In a time when Fortune 500 companies and four major automakers (GM, Ford, Toyota and DaimlerChrysler) have announced their support for a cap on global warming emissions, it’s clear that momentum is shifting.
Did you know that U.S. cars and light trucks emit 333 million tons of carbon dioxide each year? That’s more than 20 percent of our nation’s global warming pollution! Yet, average fuel efficiency has not changed in 10 years. [In fact it has gone down!]
Car companies can do more and the time for action is now.
Check out our list of facts on cars and global warming. Then, take action in support of national global warming action!
232 million Number of registered vehicles in the U.S. That’s almost one per person!

The amount of electricity saved by using a 13-watt CFL instead of a conventional 60-watt bulb translates into a reduction of 450 pounds of greenhouse gases spewed by a coal-burning power plant, according to Yahoo.
"This movement is about empowering the individual — to say to every person in America that with one easy step, they can become part of a movement that will literally change the world," said Bender, producer of the Oscar-nominated documentary "An Inconvenient Truth" made by former US vice president Gore.
"I believe the CFL is the Trojan horse into the minds of the public. Once you get somebody who feels good about making a difference and at the same time saving money, you have them thinking about what else they can do."

On Thanksgiving Day I remembered a "tent city" of homeless people set up outside City Hall in Baltimore. It was a cold day so Yo and I decided to round up and donate all the spare coats we had. It was our first time visiting. It is a very well organized community. Civilized, kind and constructive. While everyone was so very grateful for what we brought, I have to say that our coats were all a bit on the small side and didn’t fit as many people as we hoped. We also learned that they could use blankets.

It is the schools
An interesting letter in the Sun where Susan A. Seim of Lutherville givers her view on what is driving people out to suburbia.
I promise you it will not be trash or parking problems that will force many of these prosperous residents out of the city.
It will be the schools. Period.

Help stop global warming now
From Environment Maryland:
With scientific evidence pouring in, even President Bush last week acknowledged
the dangers of global warming in the State of the Union address. The facts are
that we need to take action now to prevent the worst effects of global warming:
New Orleans-like flooding of coastal cities, chronic drought caused by declining
rainfall, and more and more destructive hurricanes.
Global warming is the challenge of our generation, and we owe it to future
generations to take action. Your representative has the opportunity to do just that
by cosponsoring the Safe Climate Act, a science-based measure that would reduce
global warming pollution by 80% over the next half century.
Please sign our Stopping Global Warming Pollution petition, which urges your
representative to tackle global warming by cosponsoring the Safe Climate Act.
Then, ask your friends and family to help by forwarding this email on to them.
Around D.C., a Cheaper House May Cost You
Longer Commutes Outweigh Savings of Living in Outer Suburbs, Study Shows
By Eric M. Weiss

One of the lures of the outer suburbs is more house — maybe even one with a big yard — for less money. But a new study shows that the savings are illusory: The costs of longer commutes are so high that they can outweigh the cheaper mortgage payments.
