Footloose and fancy town

Proposed Towson makeover would push out the cars and bring in the walkers

Landscape architect Roland Oehme’s dream is modest: He wants to be able to bike from his home in West Towson to the center of the Baltimore County seat without risking his life. So far, it’s easier said than done.

On a recent bike ride into the heart of town, he said, he barely avoided a wreck on Bosley Avenue — a "treacherous" mix of six lanes of cars whizzing past at 50 mph, impatient drivers and traffic lights that don’t allow walkers or bikers enough time to cross.

Over the past week, Oehme’s cautionary tale mingled with concerns and suggestions from about 150 residents and business owners, spawning a series of recommendations that would make Towson more pedestrian- and bike-friendly — and more attractive for shops and outdoor dining.

Cromwell Valley Bike Trail update #2

Greetings: Councilman Gardina tabled the resolution two weeks ago but is
reintroducing it at the May 1st work session (many thanks to those who attended). This
worked out though since we were given more time to further develop consensus
with additional stakeholders by editing lanxguage that broadens the description of
the study area. I have sent these suggested edits to Councilman Gardina for his review but have not heard back from
him.

Please consider sending an email of support for the trail study resolution -with
edits that broaden the study area “to provide access to the Gunpowder Falls
Corridor” to replace the following language: “Cromwell Bridge Road/Minebank Run
stream valley corridor”. Or consider attending the working session at 2 PM, May 1st
in Room 205 of the old Courthouse. They provide an opportunity to sign up before
hand if you wish to speak.

ANNUAL INSTRUCTIONAL RIDE SERIES !!

IT WON’T BE LONG NOW!! The BALTIMORE BICYCLING CLUB’S Instructional Ride Series will begin with an
orientation to be held on Sunday, April 29, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. at the Dumbarton Middle School in Baltimore
County. Directions to the school are provided below.

This series is offered to anyone over 16 years of age interested in learning basic cycling skills, including doing minor road
repairs and improving as a cyclist. We want to help new riders find a comfortable riding level and develop so they can at
least ride on the BBC casual rides by the end of the series. We also want to give experienced riders who are new to club
riding the opportunity to meet and learn about group riding. The ride series will include at least one NCR (North Central
Railroad) trail ride.

The orientation will include a short cycling safety video. We will discuss bicycles, equipment and clothing and answer
questions about the program. If you bring your bicycle to the orientation, we can check it out for you and show you how
to do a quick pre-ride bike check. The indoor orientation will be held RAIN OR SHINE. Weather permitting, anyone
who wants to do so can join us on a short ride following the orientation. You must have and wear a helmet in order to
ride. The full ride schedule is listed below.
