Traffic-calming program to expand

Balto. Co. officials say revised rules will allow speed bumps, other devices on more roads

Now county officials are preparing to relax the qualifications for the program that began four years ago.

Fewer vehicles will have to travel roads where residents see a speeding problem to qualify for a speed bump. And under the revised requirements that take effect next month, the drivers won’t have to be traveling as fast.

For example, streets can now qualify for a speed bump if at least 100 cars use the road during its peak hour of use and travel at speeds 10 mph above the posted limit.

Under the old rules, 150 vehicles had to travel on the road during the peak hour.

Mount Rainier City Hall & History by National Bicycle Greenway

"Well Martin you were right, I think we are gonna wake this sleepy town up." Phil observed as he looked at my team and the different bikes they were riding.

Phil and Fred had obviously discovered a quiet haven in the middle of all the frenetic car activity that made up Washington, DC and its surrounding areas. Instead of boulevards and wide streets made friendly for the automobile, Mount Rainier had a cozy feel to it. The constant rumble of internal combustion was not a part of the background noise one could hear here. It was quiet! And for me, as a writer, quiet was delicious.

Baltimore looking to trim bike funding

At least it goes to transit.

The regional transportation plan draft currently budgets $2 billion for transit and $6.2 billion for highway projects.

The group’s amendment proposes equalizing funding for transit and road projects, calling for:

$3 billion for a regional rapid transit system,
$550 million for a new passenger rail tunnel between Penn Station and West Baltimore,
$488 million for improvements to the MARC Penn Line,
and $200 million for improvements to the MARC Camden Line, all totaling $4.3 billion.
The amendment also proposes scaling back to $3.9 billion for highway projects and $61.8 million for bicycle and pedestrian projects.

Saturday Morning Road Bike Ride

Bike Doctor of Linthicum has extended an open-invitation Saturday Morning road bike ride since 1998. The ride takes place year round, and it is rarely cancelled for weather.

The route has remained the same for the last four years so riders can "pick-up" the group if they miss the official start. Signed liability waivers are required to participate, as well as a safety check on your bike and a helmet on your head!

The ride begins @ 8:00-8:15 AM from the store and travels approximately 30 miles. The route starts clockwise around the Thurgood G. Marshall – BWI Airport on the BWI Trail and then traverses the backroads of Linthicum, Hanover, Elkridge and Severn.

We finish at the store around 10:00 AM and enjoy Jittery Joe’s coffee and goodies that riders bring in. Typically the pace is from 16-19 mph, and there is a rest stop @ 20 miles. There are several places to shorten the ride if the need arises.
