Remember<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><span>A bloated athlete is overhydrated, the exact<br \/>\n  opposite of dehydrated. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Bloating is a red flag for hyponatremia.<br \/>\n  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Mental changes plus bloating in an athlete<br \/>\n  indicate hyponatremia with brain swelling, and represent a dire medical<br \/>\n  emergency. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Don&#8217;t be fooled by a bloated athlete who is not<br \/>\n  urinating: he\/she is overhydrated and on the way to hyponatremia if not<br \/>\n  already there. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Don&#8217;t be fooled into thinking that an athlete<br \/>\n  who is throwing up is becoming dehydrated. Vomiting is frequently a symptom of<br \/>\n  hyponatremia. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Do not give a bloated athlete any fluid (except<br \/>\n  as a vehicle for salt). <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Give a bloated athlete salt.<br \/>\n  <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>When it is hot and an athlete is distressed, do<br \/>\n  not automatically conclude that the cause is dehydration and the remedy is<br \/>\n  fluid ingestion. <\/span><\/li>\n<li><span>Sweat typically has 1000 mg sodium\/quart; a<br \/>\n  typical sports drink has 440 mg sodium\/quart.
