\nThey “had it coming”
\nThey “needed to be taught a lesson”
\nSome of their sample comments:
\n\u201cThey need to obey highway rules EXACTLY the same as anyone driving.\u201d
\n\u201cUnsafe bicycle riding is the greatest single hazard in my community.\u201d
\n\u201cI don\u2019t trust bicyclists in any way.\u201d
\n\u201cIt\u2019s like they dare you to hit them.\u201d
\nIn describing his soon-to-be-published research, Piatkowski observed that, among those exhibiting what he termed \u201ccorrective behavior,\u201d they did not specify what lesson they were attempting to teach cyclists. He posits their motivation might be \u201ccrime as social control,\u201d or using a crime as a means to enforce social norms. A similar example is placing a chair in a public parking space and calling it your own, then vandalizing any other cars that park there.
