Charges to the driver of the vehicle that struck and killed Tom Palermo on December 27th were announced&nbsp;in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bikemaryland.org%2Fwp-content%2Fplugins%2Fcivicrm%2Fcivicrm%2Fextern%2Furl.php%3Fu%3D281%26qid%3D207712&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNEnc-ZadyX0rcL9qK-1btYEKMbSnA\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">press release<\/a> from&nbsp;the<br \/>\nState&#8217;s Attorney&#8217;s office.&nbsp;The death of a bicyclist in a car collision is a terrible event, but preventable if all road users slow&nbsp;down and commit&nbsp;their full attention to the operation of what can be a deadly weapon when wielded incorrectly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:16px;line-height:24px\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\">Demonstrated in the image above from&nbsp;January 1, 2015, &nbsp;over 1,000 community members came out in a powerful show&nbsp;of commraderie and cycling <span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">spirit in a time of grief, anger, and loss<\/span><\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(0,0,0);font-family:Helvetica,Arial,sans-serif;font-size:12px;line-height:24px\">.&nbsp;<\/span><span style=\"font-size:12px\"><span style=\"font-family:arial,helvetica,sans-serif\">B<span style=\"color:rgb(0,0,0);line-height:24px\">ike Maryland continues to work&nbsp;closely with Bikemore and local leaders to<br \/>\nensure that Tom\u2019s passing is not in vain. We&nbsp;express&nbsp;our gratitude for the&nbsp;increased opportunities to raise&nbsp;awarness and educate&nbsp;bicyclists and drivers alike through various media outlets, listed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bikemaryland.org%2Fwp-content%2Fplugins%2Fcivicrm%2Fcivicrm%2Fextern%2Furl.php%3Fu%3D270%26qid%3D207712&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNEpsJEIwNjfWVAnLW03jmTWoY5E9A\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(0,0,0);line-height:24px\">&nbsp;and will continue to&nbsp;work towards improved safety conditions for all road users<\/span><span style=\"color:rgb(0,0,0);line-height:24px\">.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"color:rgb(0,0,0);line-height:24px\"><span style=\"color:rgb(0,0,0);line-height:24px\"><span style=\"font-family: arial, helvetica, sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size:12px\">In November 2014, Bike Maryland hosted our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/url?q=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bikemaryland.org%2Fwp-content%2Fplugins%2Fcivicrm%2Fcivicrm%2Fextern%2Furl.php%3Fu%3D271%26qid%3D207712&amp;sa=D&amp;sntz=1&amp;usg=AFQjCNGFAzLdq1DEzkEXWlbk7uxvjWgOhQ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">first legislative planning&nbsp;meeting<\/a> with leaders and advocates from nearly every county in the state to set achievable goals for the 2015 Legislative Session, which begins&nbsp;January 14th. As we shift gears into this new year, our organization will&nbsp;determine which pro-bicycle action items we can accomplish &nbsp;in partnership local officials, government leaders and&nbsp;with transportation authorities,<br \/>\nincluding the Department of Transportation,&nbsp;Motor Vehicle Administration and State Highway Association. Public comments are being accepted on the project through January 14th and will be passed directly to the design team. The more people that demand separated or protected bike lanes, the better the chances are that&nbsp;they will be built.<\/span><br style=\"color:rgb(34,34,34);font-family:arial,sans-serif;line-height:normal\" \/><br \/>\n<br style=\"color:rgb(34,34,34);font-family:arial,sans-serif;line-height:normal\" \/><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:rgb(34,34,34);font-size:12px;font-family:arial,sans-serif;line-height:normal\">The current project will make MD 175 a 6 lane road (3 lanes in&nbsp;each direction) with striped bike lanes on the sides of the road, no barriers or separation.
