The State Highway Administration (SHA) partnered<br \/>\nwith the National Park Service to design a new shared-use path along the south<br \/>\nside of MD 51, between the towpath trailhead and the Potomac River<br \/>\nBridge.<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1407116194038_142327\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY:'Arial', 'sans-serif';FONT-SIZE:10pt;\" id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1407116194038_142326\">\u201cA popular<br \/>\nside trip for hikers and bicyclists on the towpath has been to leave the trail<br \/>\nand follow MD 51 about half a mile to the bridge to stop in town in Paw Paw,<br \/>\nW.Va., or use the river access there, but as a winding, two-lane road without<br \/>\nshoulders, MD 51 was not particularly friendly to bicylists or pedestrians,\u201d<br \/>\nsaid SHA District Engineer Anthony Crawford. \u201cWe are pleased to partner with the<br \/>\nPark Service to design a safe, attractive and environmentally-friendly<br \/>\nsolution.\u201d<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1407116194038_142348\"><span style=\"FONT-FAMILY:'Arial', 'sans-serif';FONT-SIZE:10pt;\" id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1407116194038_142347\">SHA is<br \/>\nconstructing the 1,700 foot-long, 10-foot-wide shared-use path as part of a<br \/>\nresurfacing project on MD 51. The path will be separated from the roadway with a<br \/>\nconcrete barrier topped with fencing.
