Total VMT in the United States increased by 0.6 percent from 2012, hovering just below 3 trillion, and per capita VMT dropped to 9,402 (the prior year\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssti.us\/2013\/02\/per-capita-vmt-ticks-down-for-eighth-straight-year\/\">initial estimate<\/a> was revised to 9,412).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7000\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 463px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssti.us\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/2014-VMT-chart.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7000\" alt=\"Figure 1. In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdot.maryland.gov\/Office_of_Planning_and_Capital_Programming\/Plans_Programs_Reports\/Reports\/MTP\/09MTP.pdf\">2009<\/a>, the state\u2019s long-range plan projected statewide VMT growth of 2 percent per year through 2030 (Figure 2). The plan dismissed the recent decline as a temporary consequence of high fuel prices and the economic downturn, asserting, \u201cthere is no clear evidence that Marylanders will continue to drive less in the future.\u201d However, in its updated plan released just <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdot.maryland.gov\/Office_of_Planning_and_Capital_Programming\/Maryland_Transportation_Plan\/Index.html\">last month<\/a>, the agency has left out projections entirely, declaring that \u201ca return to strong annual VMT growth is unlikely and per capita VMT [&#8230;] is actually decreasing.\u201d A handful of other states have either dampened their projections or shifted their focus toward VMT reduction goals and transportation demand management efforts.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7001\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 463px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ssti.us\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/02\/Maryland-VMT-projection-change.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7001\" alt=\"Figure 2.
