\nAnnual Planet Walk Scheduled for April 13<\/span><\/b><\/div>\n

On Saturday April 13, 2013, The Friends of Anne Arundel County Trails,
\nthe Anne Arundel Community College Astronomy Club and the Astrophysics Science
\nand Planetary Science Divisions of the NASA\/Goddard Space Flight Center have
\nteamed up to offer a day of free<\/i>
\npublic programs focusing on our solar system. The events will include a Planet
\nWalk on the B&A Trail, a multimedia presentation at
\nAnne
\nArundel Community
\nCollege and an evening Star Gazing Party at the AACC
\nObservatory.<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The day\u2019s events will kick off at 10:30 am with a Planet Walk along a 4.7
\nmile segment of the B&A Trail between Glen Burnie and
\nSeverna Park . This segment of the Trail features two
\nsculptures and ten information stations representing the Sun and the planets of
\nthe Solar System, with each planet\u2019s station spaced at its proportional distance
\nfrom the Sun. Sculptural stainless steel markers have been placed to mark the
\nrelative location of each planet site along the route. Between 10:30 am and 3:00
\npm, planetary scientists and astronomers from NASA\/Goddard, area colleges and
\nuniversities and local astronomy clubs will be at each of the planet stations to
\nprovide additional information about that planet and answer questions.
\n<\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Participants can walk or bicycle the 4.7 mile course between the Sun
\nSculpture, located just south of
\nAquahart Road behind
\nHarundale
\nPlaza in Glen Burnie and the Pluto sculpture, located
\njust north of the Earleigh Heights Road Ranger Station in
\nSeverna Park . The event is free <\/i>and free parking <\/i>is located adjacent to both
\nends of the Planet Walk. It is recommended that participants start at the Sun
\nStation. For participants seeking a shorter or less time-consuming experience,
\nthe six planets between the Sun and Saturn can be visited in the first 1 1\/4
\nmiles between Harundale and Marley Station Mall. The event will be cancelled in
\nthe event of heavy rain. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
Special evening events are also scheduled at
\nAnne Arundel
\nCommunity College \u2019s
\nArnold campus. At 7:30 pm
\na free <\/i>public multimedia presentation
\nwill be presented in Room 110 of the College\u2019s
\nDragun
\nScience
\nBuilding . Dr. Carey Lisse of the Johns
\nHopkins University Applied Physics laboratory will be speaking on \u201cThe Prospects
\nfor Life and Habitability Around Nearby Stars\u201d. Following Dr. Lisse\u2019s
\npresentation, there will be a question and answer session as well as drawings
\nfor the daytime Planet Walk raffle. The multimedia program will be presented
\nregardless of weather conditions. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
After the presentation, beginning at 8:30 pm, the AACC Astronomy Club
\nwill host a free <\/i>public Star Gazing
\nParty at the College Observatory. The Observatory is located outside Parking Lot
\n\u201cB\u201d on the
\nArnold campus. Participants will have the
\nopportunity to utilize the Observatory\u2019s telescopes with the assistance of
\nAstronomy Club members and may also bring their own telescopes. The Star Gazing
\nParty will be cancelled if overcast conditions or inclement weather prevent
\nmaking observations. <\/span><\/span><\/div>\n
The events of April 13 will give participants a chance to gain greater
\ninsight into the makeup of our solar system as well as to gain knowledge of some
\nof the ongoing research which continues to bring us new and exciting
