While I&#8217;ll highlight his solution the rest of his post is worth reading:<br \/>\n<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p><strong>The Alternative:&nbsp; Sharrows<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>If 14 feet is not available for the bike lane + parking, I recommend <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bikearlington.com\/pages\/biking-in-arlington\/sharrows\/\">sharrows<\/a> as the preferable solution.&nbsp; Maryland law requires cyclists to use bike lanes where they\u2019re present, but riders can legally ignore sharrows.&nbsp;&nbsp; So even if they\u2019re painted unreasonably close to parked cars (Maryland standards call for them to be at least 11 feet from the curb, which puts cyclists in the door&nbsp; zone again), cyclists are free to ignore them.&nbsp; <em>Sharrows give cyclists the discretion to ride where they feel it\u2019s safest<\/em>.&nbsp;&nbsp; Sharrows ideally should be painted 12\u2032 or 13\u2032 from the curb when there\u2019s parking.&nbsp; Or they can be painted down the center of the right lane as seen on <a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonwheelman.blogspot.com\/2012\/01\/sharrows-on-george-mason-drive.html\">George Mason Drive<\/a> in Arlington.&nbsp; New ideas are being tried all the time.&nbsp; Here is an <a href=\"https:\/\/laist.com\/2009\/06\/29\/long_beach_launches_bicycle_sharrow.php\">interesting hybrid<\/a> of a bike lane and a sharrow.<\/p>\n<p>So my request to Montgomery County and the state: either <strong>14 foot bike lanes<\/strong> next to parked cars or <strong>sharrows<\/strong> or sometimes <strong>no bike-specific markings at all<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclemoco.com\/2012\/04\/bike-lanes-next-to-parking-\u2013-how-wide-is-wide-enough\/\">https:\/\/cyclemoco.com\/2012\/04\/bike-lanes-next-to-parking-\u2013-how-wide-is-wide-enough\/<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In this excllent post by Jack Cochrane in Cycle MoCo Jack discusses an issue important to all Maryland cyclists, door zone bike lanes.
