{"id":229385735,"date":"2012-04-08T22:15:35","date_gmt":"2012-04-08T22:15:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=229385735"},"modified":"2012-04-08T22:15:35","modified_gmt":"2012-04-08T22:15:35","slug":"one-mile-on-a-bike-is-a-42-economic-gain-to-society-one-mile-driving-is-a-20-loss","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=229385735","title":{"rendered":"One mile on a bike is a $.42 economic gain to society, one mile driving is a $.20 loss"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Christopher Mims, Grist<\/p>\n<p>Copenhagen, the <a href=\"https:\/\/grist.org\/living\/2010-11-28-copenhagen-denmark-plans-bike-superhighways\/\">bicycle-friendliest place on the planet<\/a>, publishes a biannual <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cycling-embassy.dk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/05\/Bicycle-account-2010-Copenhagen.pdf\">Bicycle Account<\/a>, and buried in its pages is a rather astonishing fact, <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.bikeleague.org\/blog\/2011\/06\/rest-of-the-world-keeps-us-on-our-toes\/\">reports Andy Clarke, president of the league of American Bicyclists<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cWhen all these factors are added together the net social gain is DKK 1.22 per cycled kilometer. For purposes of comparison there is a net social loss of DKK 0.69 per kilometer driven by car.\u201d 1.22 Danish crowns is about 25 cents and a kilometer is 6\/10 of a mile, so we are talking about a net economic gain to society of 42 cents for every bicycle mile traveled.
