{"id":229025789,"date":"2012-04-04T18:16:29","date_gmt":"2012-04-04T18:16:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=229025789"},"modified":"2012-04-04T18:16:29","modified_gmt":"2012-04-04T18:16:29","slug":"new-maryland-bike-initiative-with-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=229025789","title":{"rendered":"New Maryland bike initiative, with funding!"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by Jack Cochrane, CycleMoCo<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-caption alignleft\" style=\"width: 160px\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdot.maryland.gov\/Office%20of%20Planning%20and%20Capital%20Programming\/Bike\/Cycle_Maryland.html\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/471cbb069aedf971f036f38da37fe3c0-21d5cf726700ce876e8eed191027028d-150x150-6-nocrop.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Cycle Maryland<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>The state has created a new bike program called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdot.maryland.gov\/Office%20of%20Planning%20and%20Capital%20Programming\/Bike\/Cycle_Maryland.html\">Cycle Maryland<\/a>.&nbsp; It looks very encouraging.&nbsp; In keeping with&nbsp;its <a href=\"https:\/\/civsourceonline.com\/2012\/01\/23\/maryland-pushes-online-tools-to-increase-transparency\/\">secrecy in goverment<\/a> policy, the state did this without telling too many people, at least not&nbsp;MoBike.&nbsp; But we\u2019ll take it!<\/p>\n<p>Part of&nbsp;Cycle Maryland&nbsp;is a bikeway \u201cretrofit\u201d program that will fund local projects costing under $100K each.&nbsp; Counties and cities are supposed to request funding for specific&nbsp;projects.&nbsp; However this year the county&nbsp;was given only one week\u2019s notice to come up with&nbsp;projects!&nbsp; As a result we ended up with just signage projects,&nbsp; i.e. signing existing bike routes, mostly streets.&nbsp; I personally suggested more robust improvements (in the 3 days notice I had) including upgrading the Bethesda Trolley Trail by White Flint Metro, providing better <a href=\"https:\/\/g.co\/maps\/cwhuk\">bike access to Rockville Metro<\/a> and&nbsp;supporting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.internetigloo.com\/mobike\/images\/woodmont_sidewalk2.jpg\">two-way travel on Woodmont Ave<\/a> to Bethesda Metro and the Capital Crescent Trail.&nbsp; But things were too rushed.<\/p>\n<p>Fortunately the state is&nbsp;requesting another round of projects from&nbsp;counties and cities, to be funded&nbsp;in 2013.&nbsp; They\u2019re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdot.maryland.gov\/Office%20of%20Planning%20and%20Capital%20Programming\/Bike\/Bikeways_About.html#Application_Information\">accepting project submissions <\/a>from local jurisdictions through May 4th, 2012.<\/p>\n<p>This&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gazette.net\/article\/20120314\/NEWS\/703149563\/1007\/trio-of-montgomery-county-bike-paths-to-be-upgraded&amp;template=gazette\">Gazette article<\/a> describes&nbsp;the funding initiative, but it\u2019s misleading because it states that \u201cbike paths\u201d are going to be built or upgraded when nothing more than signs are being added.&nbsp; Here are the <em>actual<\/em> state-funded projects:<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Montgomery Mall to&nbsp;downtown Bethesda route<\/strong> \u2014 Adding signs along a 5.2&nbsp;mile on-road route&nbsp;connecting Montgomery Mall to&nbsp;Bethesda&nbsp;Metro and the Capital Crescent Trail, with a spur&nbsp;to NIH&nbsp;($21,000)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Matthew Henson trail to Forest Glen metro<\/strong> \u2014 Adding signs along a 7.4 mile existing route&nbsp;(mostly on-road) connecting Mathew Henson Trail to Wheaton and Forest Glen Metro stations ($33,000)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Silver Spring US 29 local route alternate<\/strong> \u2014 Adding signs along a 2.5 mile route parallel to US 29&nbsp;(mostly on-road) from&nbsp;New Hampshire Ave to East Randolph Rd&nbsp;($9,000)<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">All these signs are part of a comprehensive signed route network for the county, which we need.&nbsp; But we can do a lot better than just that!<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/cyclemoco.com\/2012\/03\/new-maryland-bike-initiative-with-funding\/\">https:\/\/cyclemoco.com\/2012\/03\/new-maryland-bike-initiative-with-funding\/<\/a>oldId.20120404181629874<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Jack Cochrane, CycleMoCo Cycle Maryland The state has created a new bike program called Cycle Maryland.&nbsp; It looks very encouraging.&nbsp; In keeping with&nbsp;its secrecy in goverment policy, the state did this without telling too many people, at least not&nbsp;MoBike.&nbsp; But we\u2019ll take it!
