{"id":223552568,"date":"2012-02-01T09:56:08","date_gmt":"2012-02-01T09:56:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=223552568"},"modified":"2012-02-01T09:56:08","modified_gmt":"2012-02-01T09:56:08","slug":"krasnopoler-family-pushes-for-competency-tests-for-maryland-drivers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=223552568","title":{"rendered":"Krasnopoler family pushes for competency tests for Maryland drivers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Fern Shen, Baltimore Brew<\/p>\n<p>&#8230;<br \/>\nKrasnopoler is much more comfortable when he\u2019s talking about the tougher driving skills requirements his family is backing in the Maryland General Assembly this session \u2013 changes he thinks could prevent tragedies like the Feb. 26, 2011 crash that claimed the life of his son, Nathan Krasnopoler.<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\n\u201cThe state is already offering these [functional capacity] tests but they are done by medical referral or voluntarily,\u201d he said. \u201cIt would be easy to make them a requirement.\u201d<br \/>\n&#8230;<br \/>\nThe family is suggesting the tougher license requirement be added to an MVA-sponsored bill (SB 111) that proposes to increase the amount of time between license renewals from five years to eight years. Not surprisingly, the Krasnopolers oppose that change.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t think of any reason they would propose this other than to save money,\u201d he says witheringly.<\/p>\n<p>Other Issues<\/p>\n<p>There are two other legislative priorities on the family\u2019s agenda this session, Krasnopoler said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>One is to increase the consequences of failing to remain on the scene of an accident that results in injuries or death.<br \/>\nDoing so is currently a misdemeanor offense that is rarely enforced because the offender gets no points on their license, he said.
