Mencken, John Waters and the<br \/>\ncreators of \u201cThe Wire.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>\n<i>Baltimore Brew<\/i>, as our loyal readers<br \/>\nknow, is <b>a daily news website <\/b>that gets behind development deals,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorebrew.com\/2011\/09\/09\/looking-through-the-loopholes-at-the-mayor%E2%80%99s-top-contributors\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> tracks<\/a><br \/>\ncampaign cash,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baltimorebrew.com\/2010\/11\/10\/loring-cornish\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> features<\/a> outsider artists and offers gazpacho recipes with equal<br \/>\nverve. We\u2019ve become a municipal must-read.\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Since former <i>Washington Post<\/i><br \/>\nreporter Fern Shen launched the<i> Brew<\/i> a few years ago, the site has won plaudits<br \/>\nfrom publications ranging from the <i>Baltimore City Paper<\/i>, which named it the<br \/>\nbest local on-line news site three years in a row, to the<i> New York Times<\/i>, which<br \/>\ncalls it \u201ca reason for cheer.\u201d<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>Shen and former <i>Baltimore Sun<\/i><br \/>\ninvestigative reporter Mark Reutter, working with a team of more than a dozen<br \/>\nother volunteers, have built a dedicated corps of 25,000 regular readers by:<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<ul>\n<li>\n<b>Giving a voice to Baltimore\u2019s<br \/>\nvoiceless <\/b>through coverage of the workers<br \/>\nat the Sparrows Point steel mill and residents of impoverished neighborhoods in<br \/>\none of America\u2019s poorest cities.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Holding<br \/>\ncity and other officials accountable<\/b> by reporting on deals with favored<br \/>\ncontractors, tax breaks for big political contributors and regulatory<br \/>\nconcessions to major industries.\n<\/li>\n<li>\n<b>Creating a<br \/>\nforum for city planners and visionaries to re-imagine Baltimore<\/b>, helping ensure<br \/>\nthat in the future it can provide the jobs and neighborhoods its residents need<br \/>\n\u2013 without resorting to tax gimmicks and giveaways.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Now we<br \/>\nwant to expand the<i> Brew\u2019s<\/i> coverage of the city\u2019s spending practices and tax<br \/>\nbreaks, to make sure Baltimore uses its scarce resources for programs that<br \/>\nbenefit its people and not the politically-connected. And we want to make the <i>Brew<\/i><br \/>\nsustainable by tapping new income streams and eventually paying salaries.&nbsp;<br \/>\nWe plan to do this by:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>\nExpanding<br \/>\ncoverage to include online <b>video and podcasts<\/b>.\n<\/li>\n<li>Creating<br \/>\nmore<b> interactive features <\/b>with readers.\n<\/li>\n<li>Publishing<br \/>\nspecial <b>food, culture and lifestyle<\/b> pages.\n<\/li>\n<li>Expanding<br \/>\n<b>school and neighborhood<\/b> coverage.\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So far, we\u2019ve kept the <i>Brew<\/i><br \/>\npercolating with tens of thousands of dollars\u2019 worth of donated time. With<br \/>\na bare-bones budget, we\u2019ve broken stories, shaped the civic conversation and<br \/>\nmodeled a new kind of local media.<\/p>\n<div>But we can\u2019t expect the quality work we want without paying talented people for their time.
