A new report from Canadian researchers connects higher fuel costs with reduced sprawl. A <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.lib.umn.edu\/levin031\/transportationist\/2011\/04\/study-high-gas-prices-lead-to.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pair of recent studies<\/a> from Mississippi State (via The Transportationist) link higher gas prices with safer roads.<\/p>\n<p>The first, which appeared in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science?_ob=ArticleURL&amp;_udi=B6V6F-51F28KC-1&amp;_user=10&amp;_coverDate=12%2F31%2F2010&amp;_rdoc=1&amp;_fmt=high&amp;_orig=gateway&amp;_origin=gateway&amp;_sort=d&amp;_docanchor=&amp;view=c&amp;_searchStrId=1747320728&amp;_rerunOrigin=google&amp;_acct=C000050221&amp;_version=1&amp;_urlVersion=0&amp;_userid=10&amp;md5=58769ce9c64f905541e01c229386c1ba&amp;searchtype=a\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Journal of Safety Research<\/em><\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/nexus.umn.edu\/Papers\/GasPricesAndTrafficSafety.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pdf<\/a>) last December, studied the relationship between gas prices and car accidents in Mississippi between 2004 and 2008. The researchers report both both short- and intermediate-term links between high prices and reduced crashes, with intermediate effects generally stronger.
