{"id":199701900,"date":"2011-05-01T08:45:00","date_gmt":"2011-05-01T08:45:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=199701900"},"modified":"2011-05-01T08:45:00","modified_gmt":"2011-05-01T08:45:00","slug":"no-other-public-forum-in-which-people-wish-death-on-their-fellow-citizens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=199701900","title":{"rendered":"No other public forum in which people wish death on their fellow citizens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>from Streetsblog.net by Angie Schmitt<\/p>\n<p>Whet Moser mentioned recently in the Chicago Magazine blog that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagomag.com\/Chicago-Magazine\/The-312\/April-2011\/The-State-of-Illinois-Will-Start-Tracking-Bike-Doorings-But-Its-Blog-Commenters-Im-Afraid-Of\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">he\u2019s more afraid of spiteful comments from readers<\/a> than new data that may show there\u2019s a huge number of dooring bike crashes going on in Illinois.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>Whenever an article about some modest improvement in the lives of bicyclists is published, in this case news that the state of Illinois is going to start tracking when&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.chicagotribune.com\/news\/local\/ct-met-bike-dooring-accidents-0425-20110424,0,2629398.story\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bicycle accidents involve doorings<\/a>, the comments section will inevitably be filled with vitriol, and I can\u2019t help but read it. There\u2019s no other public forum in which people wish death on their fellow citizens like the comments to a story about biking. And I find it grimly fascinating, like a moral gapers block.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>In line with a story that aired Thursday night about doorings and this new rule about collecting data, WTTW channel 11 (Chicago\u2019s PBS affiliate) started a discussion thread title, \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.wttw.com\/main.taf?erube_fh=wttw&amp;wttw.submit.getThread=1&amp;wttw.threadid=111032&amp;wttw.threadPath=42,8,80,1,1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Should drivers be more courteous and mindful of bikers<\/a>?\u201d I think WTTW has a wildly different audience than those who read the Chicago Tribune online.
