Pedestrians are 1.5<br \/>\ntimes more likely than car passengers to be killed in a motor vehicle crash.<br \/>\n2<br \/>\n\u2022 Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for U.S. teens, accounting for more than one in three deaths in<br \/>\nthis age group.<br \/>\n3<br \/>\n\u2022 Every day, more than 16 people are killed and more than 1,300 people are injured in car crashes involving a distracted<br \/>\ndriver.<br \/>\n4<br \/>\n\u2022 Child safety seats reduce the risk of death in cars by 71% for infants and by 54% for toddlers\u2019 ages one to four.<br \/>\n5<br \/>\n\u2022 Alcohol-impairment\u2014either for the driver or for the pedestrian\u2014was reported in 48% of the traffic crashes that<br \/>\nresulted in pedestrian death in 2008.<br \/>\n6<br \/>\n\u2022 Seatbelt use reduces serious injuries and deaths in car crashes by 50%.<br \/>\n7<br \/>\n\u2022 A speed limit of 40 mph or below reduces the risk of a crash by 4 times that of a crash on a road with a speed limit of<br \/>\n65 mph or greater.<br \/>\n8<br \/>\n\u2022 If every state had strong graduated drivers licensing (GDL) programs to help new drivers gain skills under low risk<br \/>\nconditions, 175 lives would be saved and about 350,000 injuries prevented each year.<br \/>\n9<\/big><br \/>\n<!--more--><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>1<br \/>\nCenters for Disease Control and Prevention.
