{"id":193414217,"date":"2011-02-17T14:10:17","date_gmt":"2011-02-17T14:10:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=193414217"},"modified":"2011-02-17T14:10:17","modified_gmt":"2011-02-17T14:10:17","slug":"baltimore-police-assist-local-cyclists","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=193414217","title":{"rendered":"Baltimore Police Assist Local Cyclists"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>from Bike Baltimore by Nate Evans<\/p>\n<p>At last night\u2019s Mayor\u2019s Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC) meeting, we were joined by Major Tony Brown of the Baltimore Police Department. This is the second meeting that local cyclists have had with the police department as Baltimore moves to promote a safer cycling environment.<\/p>\n<p>Major Brown shared important information all cyclists should know:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Accident reports are not always taken<\/strong>, even with vehicular accidents.&nbsp; If personal injury occurs, then an accident report will be taken.<\/li>\n<li><strong>The Baltimore Police Department will not tolerate aggressive driving against cyclists.<\/strong>&nbsp; While accidents do happen, if the accident is intentional, it is classified as an \u201cassault\u201d and should be reported.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<li>The police department is developing a <strong>cyclist informational video<\/strong> to be shown at roll call and during the department\u2019s on-going annual training.&nbsp; MBAC needs to provide a script and actors for the video&nbsp;<em> (Any volunteers?)<\/em><\/li>\n<li><strong>All cyclists must obey the rules of the road!<\/strong>&nbsp; As most officers\u2019 exposure to cycling is by observing the practices of bike messengers, this has not helped encourage a positive image.&nbsp; Please stop at red lights, stop signs and yield to pedestrians.<\/li>\n<li>If you are <strong>planning a large bike ride<\/strong>, please contact the shift commander at the local precinct just to let them know.<\/li>\n<li>DOT\u2019s Parking Control should be contacted to cite <strong>cars illegally parking in bike lanes.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>By the next meeting (Tuesday, March 15th), the Major would like a list of :<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>locations where cyclists are routinely harassed by motorists<\/strong> and<\/li>\n<li><strong>locations where bike theft is a common occurrence<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The police department will increase patrols where the harassment occurs and set up a \u2018sting\u2019 operation where bike theft occurs.&nbsp; <strong>Please post these locations below!<\/strong> or email me.<\/p>\n<p>These are the first steps in helping promote a positive relationship and understanding between the Baltimore Police Department and&nbsp;area cyclists.&nbsp; We thank Major Brown for his time and efforts!<strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/BikeBaltimore\/~3\/7oUY6lGrDD8\/\">https:\/\/feedproxy.google.com\/~r\/BikeBaltimore\/~3\/7oUY6lGrDD8\/<\/a>oldId.20110217141017481<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from Bike Baltimore by Nate Evans At last night\u2019s Mayor\u2019s Bicycle Advisory Committee (MBAC) meeting, we were joined by Major Tony Brown of the Baltimore Police Department.
