{"id":186750421,"date":"2010-12-02T11:07:01","date_gmt":"2010-12-02T11:07:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=186750421"},"modified":"2010-12-02T11:07:01","modified_gmt":"2010-12-02T11:07:01","slug":"road-diet-on-lawyers-road-in-fairfax-a-big-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=186750421","title":{"rendered":"Road diet on Lawyers Road in Fairfax a big success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>from TheWashCycle by washcycle<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>This is data from FABB on VDOT&#8217;s results after reconfiguring the road to remove a traffic lane and replace it with two bike lanes.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Average speed dropped by about 1 mph, from roughly 45 to 44 mph,  but there was a more notable change in the fastest speeds.  Before the  road diet, <strong>13% of vehicles were recorded at 50 mph or above<\/strong>.  After, only <strong>1% of vehicles were recorded at or over 50 mph<\/strong>.  These speed results led VDOT to reduce the speed limit on Lawyers from 45 mph to 40 mph.<\/li>\n<li>In the four years prior to the road diet, Lawyers averaged <strong>15 crashes per year<\/strong>.  In the first year after the road diet, we observed only <strong>3 crashes in the same segment of Lawyers, for an 80 percent drop<\/strong>. It is too early to make any firm conclusions about the safety results, but the initial trend is very encouraging.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>And from a survey<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>69 percent of respondents said <strong>Lawyers seems safer<\/strong> after the road diet was implemented, compared with 15 percent who felt that it seems less safe.<\/li>\n<li>47 percent of respondents <strong>bicycled on Lawyers more often<\/strong> than before, indicating that the road diet encourages cycling as a travel mode.<\/li>\n<li>69 percent of respondents said <strong>auto travel times have not increased<\/strong>, even though 59 percent said speeds dropped.<\/li>\n<li>74 percent of respondents agreed that the <strong>project improved Lawyers Road<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>71 percent of respondents agreed that <strong>other road diets should be considered in Northern Virginia<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That is really encouraging, and kudos to VDOT for pursuing this project.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thewashcycle.com\/2010\/12\/road-diet-on-lawyers-road-in-fairfax-a-big-success.html\">https:\/\/www.thewashcycle.com\/2010\/12\/road-diet-on-lawyers-road-in-fairfax-a-big-success.html<\/a>oldId.20101202110701764<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>from TheWashCycle by washcycle This is data from FABB on VDOT&#8217;s results after reconfiguring the road to remove a traffic lane and replace it with two bike lanes.
