{"id":182698125,"date":"2010-10-16T13:28:45","date_gmt":"2010-10-16T13:28:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=182698125"},"modified":"2010-10-16T13:28:45","modified_gmt":"2010-10-16T13:28:45","slug":"quebec-wants-our-three-foot-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=182698125","title":{"rendered":"Quebec Wants Our Three Foot Law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Kinner<\/p>\n<p><input name=\"ctl00&#36;ctl00&#36;body&#36;body&#36;ctl05&#36;ctl01\" id=\"ctl00_ctl00_body_body_ctl05_ctl01_State\" value=\"value:Filed%20under%3A%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fcommunities.canada.com%2Fmontrealgazette%2Fblogs%2Fontwowheels%2Farchive%2Ftags%2Ftraffic%2Bcalming%2Fdefault.aspx%22%20rel%3D%22tag%22%3Etraffic%20calming%3C%2Fa%3E%2C%20%3Ca%20href%3D%22http%3A%2F%2Fcommunities.canada.com%2Fmontrealgazette%2Fblogs%2Fontwowheels%2Farchive%2Ftags%2Fbicycle%2Bsafety%2Fdefault.aspx%22%20rel%3D%22tag%22%3Ebicycle%20safety%3C%2Fa%3E\" type=\"hidden\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"storycontent\">\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/communities.canada.com\/montrealgazette\/resized-image.ashx\/__size\/550x550\/__key\/CommunityServer.Blogs.Components.WeblogFiles\/ontwowheels\/5444.traffic.jpg\" alt=\"\" style=\"border: 0px;\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\"><i>A poster fromt he site <\/i><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.copenhagenize.com\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>www.copenhagenize.com<\/i><\/a><i>. &nbsp;It&#8217;s true, isn&#8217;t it?<\/i><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">You\u2019re riding up St. Laurent, you\u2019re on the right side of<br \/>\nthe road trying to keep a safe distance between you and the parked cars, but<br \/>\nalso not take up a whole lane.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>The<br \/>\nlight behind you turns green and you hear an engine behind you,<br \/>\naccelerating.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>A sports car passes<br \/>\nyou, with about a foot of clearance on your left so the driver doesn\u2019t have to<br \/>\nswitch lanes.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>You feel the car\u2019s<br \/>\nair stream rush past you and you think \u201cWow, a foot off and I would be a bloody<br \/>\npile on the pavement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Sound familiar?<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">I remember spending a day wandering around Manhattan last<br \/>\nyear.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>I was walking around with a<br \/>\nfriend who was also a cycling enthusiast and had actually done some advocacy<br \/>\nwork in New York City.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>She kept<br \/>\npointing out the white bicycles that serve as memorials for cyclists killed on<br \/>\nthe road. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>It\u2019s an effective system<br \/>\n\u2013 the spray-painted, all-white bicycles serve as ghostly, elegant reminders of<br \/>\nthe perils of cycling in our cities. <span>&nbsp;<\/span>There are a lot of them in Manhattan.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">Each one has a bouquet of flowers and a laminated note about<br \/>\nwho the person was and how he or she died.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>An overwhelming majority of them sound something like this:<br \/>\n\u201cJohn was riding down 6<sup>th<\/sup> Avenue, he swerved to avoid a piece of<br \/>\nconstruction steel and was hit from behind by a truck.\u201d<span>&nbsp; <\/span>We don\u2019t have the white-bike memorial<br \/>\ntradition here, but my anecdotal evidence points heavily to this problem.<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\">That\u2019s why I\u2019m happy to see that Maryland recently has<br \/>\npassed a new law to prevent such a thing.<span>&nbsp;<br \/>\n<\/span>In Maryland, you now have to give cyclists three feet of clearance when<br \/>\nyou pass.<span>&nbsp; <\/span>If you don\u2019t, you\u2019re<br \/>\nsubject to a &#36;500 fine (enforcement is another issue!).<span>&nbsp; <\/span>It came with a bunch of other<br \/>\ncyclist-friendly laws, like a repeal of an old law which stated that cyclists <i>had<\/i> to use the shoulder whenever it was<br \/>\npaved, and also a commitment to investing in cycling infrastructure.<span>&nbsp;&nbsp;Read about the law <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tbd.com\/blogs\/tbd-on-foot\/2010\/10\/new-bike-laws-in-effect-in-maryland-today-2547.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a><span>.<\/span><br \/>\n&#8230;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/communities.canada.com\/montrealgazette\/blogs\/ontwowheels\/archive\/2010\/10\/15\/maryland-s-three-foot-law.aspx\">https:\/\/communities.canada.com\/montrealgazette\/blogs\/ontwowheels\/archive\/2010\/10\/15\/maryland-s-three-foot-law.aspx<\/a>oldId.20101016132845760<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>By Adam Kinner A poster fromt he site www.copenhagenize.com. &nbsp;It&#8217;s true, isn&#8217;t it?
