{"id":182688477,"date":"2010-10-16T10:47:57","date_gmt":"2010-10-16T10:47:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=182688477"},"modified":"2010-10-16T10:47:57","modified_gmt":"2010-10-16T10:47:57","slug":"were-losing-an-acre-of-farmland-every-minute-according-to-new-data","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=182688477","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re losing an acre of farmland every minute, according to new data"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>from Switchboard, from NRDC \u203a Kaid Benfield&#8217;s Blog by Kaid Benfield<\/p>\n<div class=\"entry-likers\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-debug\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-annotations\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-body\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"item-body\">\n<div>\n<p>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/icma.org\/en\/icma\/knowledge_network\/documents\/kn\/Document\/301483\/Putting_Smart_Growth_to_Work_in_Rural_Communities\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/10\/4847185904_8b98a6e809_e.jpg\" alt=\"location unknown (by: US EPA)\" title=\"location unknown (by: US EPA)\" height=\"361\" width=\"500\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>41 million acres of rural land has been permanently lost in the last 25 years to highways, shopping malls, poorly planned sprawl and other development, according to <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.farmland.org\/2010\/09\/farmland-is-at-risk-in-every-state\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a new analysis by the American Farmland Trust<\/a>.&nbsp; Of that amount, 23 million acres (an area the size of Indiana) was agricultural land.&nbsp; The rate of recent farmland loss has been an astounding acre per minute.<\/p>\n<p>There has been a resurgence of interest across the country in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nrdc.org\/thisgreenlife\/0812.asp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fresh, healthy, locally grown food<\/a>.&nbsp; But the farms that supply local food, those closest to our urban areas, are the most vulnerable and tend to be lost the fastest.&nbsp; Moreover, farmland close to the urban\/suburban edge is frequently our most productive for supplying food on the tables of American families:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cAmerica\u2019s cities sprang up where the land was the richest.&nbsp; Today, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmland.org\/programs\/localfood\/fresh-food-grown-on-the-urban-fringe.asp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">the farms closest<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmland.org\/programs\/localfood\/fresh-food-grown-on-the-urban-fringe.asp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> <\/a><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.farmland.org\/programs\/localfood\/fresh-food-grown-on-the-urban-fringe.asp\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">to our urban areas produce an astounding 91% of our fruit and 78% of our vegetables<\/a>, but they remain the most threatened. In addition, many of these at-risk, urban-edge farms are the ones growing fresh food for farmers markets, CSA\u2019s [community-supported agriculture services] and other direct-to-consumer outlets.
