It\u2019s happening in Portland (see page 11 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bikeportland.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/01\/bikecount2009reportfinal.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">of this report<\/a> [PDF]). It\u2019s happening in <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.streetsblog.org\/2009\/06\/05\/safety-in-numbers-its-happening-in-nyc\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York City<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The phenomenon, dubbed \u201csafety in numbers,\u201d was first identified in 2003, <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cycle-helmets.com\/safety_in_numbers2.pdf\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in an academic paper<\/a> by public health researcher Peter Jacobsen [PDF]. After being asked by officials in Pasadena, Calif., if their city \u201cwas a dangerous place to bicycle,\u201d Jacobsen began looking at crash data from various communities where bicycle ridership had fluctuated over time.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">What he found surprised him: The number of crashes involving bikes correlated with the number of riders in a community. As ridership fluctuated, so did the crash rate.
