These funds have helped create more than 19,000 miles of trails, walking and bicycling facilities across the country\u2014likely including your favorite nearby trail.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">AAA encourages its members to get outdoors and explore the country\u2014including by bicycle\u2014so why do they support cutting programs that help their members do precisely that? <\/span><\/p>\n<p>On September 1, Rails-to-Trails Conservancy President Keith Laughlin sent a letter asking this question to AAA. Robert Darbelnet, president and CEO of AAA, was quick to respond yet he did not address our central concern.<br \/><span style=\"font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><br \/>AAA Mid-Atlantic suggests that an <strong>&#36;89 billion annual highway fund shortfall<\/strong> can be blamed on investments in walking and bicycling. <strong>But those investments total less than &#36;1 billion annually<\/strong> and produce tremendous benefits for everyone, including drivers. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">The reality is that many bicyclists drive, support AAA, pay gas taxes and want balanced transportation systems that provide the choice to get around in a variety of ways\u2014for commuting or daily errands, or for fun and exercise.<\/p>\n<p>If AAA\u2019s false ideas take root, America\u2019s transportation future\u2014one where communities are more livable and people have safe and convenient choices for getting around\u2014is in jeopardy.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<td style=\"width: 30%;\">\n<p><span style=\"font-family: verdana,arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: 100%;\"><strong>We know that:<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8230; if given the choice, Americans would allocate 22 percent of transportation funds to develop and improve bicycling and walking facilities\u2014much, much more than is currently being funded. <\/p>\n<p>&#8230; drivers can be bicyclists, too\u2014Americans sometimes drive and other times bicycle or walk to reach destinations based on which is most convenient, pleasant, healthy or affordable for a given trip.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; bicyclists also drive\u2014they pay their fair share of taxes to support all transportation modes.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; cyclists don\u2019t only use trails and bike lanes for pleasure trips\u2014they also use them as healthy commuting options and safe routes to school for their children.<\/p>\n<p>&#8230; when more people choose trails and bike lanes for travel, the roads are less congested and create a better transportation experience for all.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/td>\n<\/tr>\n<\/tbody>\n<\/table>\n<p>Help us show AAA that trail, walking and bicycling programs actually benefit everyone, very much including their own members!<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.railstotrails.org\/site\/PageNavigator\/AAA\">https:\/\/support.railstotrails.org\/site\/PageNavigator\/AAA<\/a>oldId.20100922082938262<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The American Automobile Association (AAA) wants Congress to cut funds that support trail, biking and walking programs in order to funnel that money to the highway system.
