That may be the early lesson from<br \/>\na 30-day experiment Houston METRO is conducting on 11 trains. The transit<br \/>\nauthority has removed four benches &#8212; or eight seats &#8212; from cars on those trains in a bid to increase comfort for users who need extra space. <\/p>\n<p>The move is a win<br \/>\nfor a diverse group of transit riders, from cyclists to wheelchair users to parents with young children,<br \/>\nexplains Dean Hall at <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.neohouston.com\/2010\/08\/metro-removes-seats-in-light-rail-cars\/?utm_source=feedburner&amp;utm_medium=feed&amp;utm_campaign=Feed%3A+neohouston+%28neoHOUSTON%29\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">NEOHouston<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 306px;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/streetsblog.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/08\/16\/newbikehours3.jpg\" alt=\"newbikehours3.jpg\" height=\"200\" width=\"300\" style=\"float: right;\" \/><span>Photo: <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/blogs.ridemetro.org\/blogs\/write_on\/default.aspx\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Houston Metro<\/a><br \/><\/span><\/div>\n<blockquote>\n<p>This is a boon for bicyclists who can use the open space for their bike<br \/>\nwhile holding on to the new overhead straps.&nbsp; The open area can also be<br \/>\nutilized by persons in wheelchairs.<\/p>\n<p>However, I think the biggest gains will be for parents who transport<br \/>\ntheir infants and toddlers in strollers.&nbsp; Previously, only the smallest<br \/>\numbrella-style strollers could easily negotiate an LRT car\u2019s narrow<br \/>\ncenter aisle. I have a personal experience trying to manage one of the<br \/>\nlarger style strollers and I received looks from other passengers who<br \/>\nhad to make room for me and the stroller that was convenient for me,<br \/>\nbut an imposition to those around me&#8230;<\/p>\n<p>So, thank you, METRO.
