{"id":176833621,"date":"2010-08-09T16:27:01","date_gmt":"2010-08-09T16:27:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=176833621"},"modified":"2010-08-09T16:27:01","modified_gmt":"2010-08-09T16:27:01","slug":"fast-free-trails","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=176833621","title":{"rendered":"Fast, Free Trails"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>by washcycle<\/p>\n<p>A Nevada non-profit can quickly remove railroad ties and tracks, dispose of them and replace it with a crushed stone surface. <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/news\/local\/articles\/2010\/08\/01\/nevada_nonprofit_helps_danvers_methuen_get_rail_trail_projects_done_quickly_cheaply\/?s_campaign=8315\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">For free<\/a>. <\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>While most rail-to-trail projects can<br \/>\n linger in the costly planning and design process for a decade, Godsey<br \/>\nhas placed Methuen\u2019s on the fast track by accepting an offer she could<br \/>\nnot refuse \u2014 having the railroad tracks and ties removed, disposed of,<br \/>\nand replaced with a crushed-stone surface for free by Iron Horse<br \/>\nPreservation Society, a Reno, Nev., nonprofit.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cThey basically come in, take out the rail stock and in essence, they give you a rail trail,\u2019\u2019 Godsey said.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-employee organization makes its money from the sale of the<br \/>\nrailroad material, and makes sure that none of it ends up in a landfill<\/p>\n<p>Because the organization does the work at no cost, Hattrup argues, a<br \/>\nbidding process is not necessary. It also eliminates the cost for the<br \/>\ncommunity of removing creosote-treated railroad ties, which are<br \/>\nconsidered a hazardous material, he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>Joe Hattrup, Iron Horse Preservation director, says the process most groups use is costly and cumbersome.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cSome of the cities were paying huge amounts of money, six digits, a<br \/>\nquarter-million dollars, for these designs . . . and then you don\u2019t have<br \/>\n anything yet but a road map to look for more money. They do all these<br \/>\nfeasibility studies that by the time it\u2019s done, by the time you finish<br \/>\nyour studies, it\u2019s 10 years later and it\u2019s not even relevant anymore.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not easy to build a rail trail in Massachusetts.
