Thank you to the 1,320+ riders who came out for Bike to Work Day 2010!  <\/div>\n

Regional rallies were well attended and enjoyed by over a thousand bicyclists.  Rideshare coordinators, convoy leaders and bike mentors around the region deserve a big congratulations.  Thank you to regional sponsors; MASN<\/a>, PNC<\/a>, Pricepoint<\/a> and RoadID<\/a> and all the great local sponsors.  A follow-up survey will be sent in a week.<\/div>\n

Green Zone<\/a> folding bike prize winners were in Baltimore City, Annapolis and Harford County.  Better World Club<\/a> membership winners were from APG and Bel Air rallies.  Panera<\/a>, a loaf of bread a month for a year, winner was from Howard County.  One lucky winner got an October 3rd Tour duPort<\/a> registration free and three winners are headed to Tour Dem Parks<\/a> on Sunday June 13th.<\/div>\n

Just over $1 billion in transportation projects are being proposed. Projects that will benefit biking and walking include: North Avenue Streetscape, improvements to the neighborhood around the West Baltimore MARC station, and the reconstruction, with bike compatible features, of the US 40 bridge over the Patapsco River and US 1 bridge over the Little Gunpowder Falls.

In addition to the draft TIP, an air quality report regarding the impact of the proposed projects on the Baltimore region is also available for review. The public review and comment period opened Friday, May 21 and comments are welcome through Tuesday, June 22.

Draft FY 2011 Goal for Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (May 17 – June 16)<\/strong><\/p>\n

The BRTB recently adopted a Disadvantaged Business Enterprise (DBE) policy when using federal funds to implement certain transportation activities in the Unified Planning Work Program. Now, the BRTB is releasing a proposed participation goal of 20% for FY 2011. Comments are welcome through Wednesday, June 16.

STATEWIDE SURVEY – SCHOOL POLICY STUDY<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n

Initial study findings…<\/em>
\n Initial findings suggest that Maryland public schools typically follow procedures when it comes to walking and bicycling policies.
 
Collaboration between the Maryland Department of Transportation and the Maryland State Department of Education led to a survey of policies and practices to address walking and bicycling to school.  All 24 school districts were surveyed, covering approximately 330 schools, ranging from elementary to high school, in urban, suburban and rural areas. 
 
Elementary schools have participated the most in organized walking and biking activities in both urban and suburban areas.  Nearly 17 jurisdictions are involved in the Safe Routes to School program and 50 schools have “walk to school day” activities annually.
 
Walking and biking are of significant interest for many reasons. Not the least of which is a statistic that shows school districts spend anywhere from $2.7M to $97M dollars annually to bus students.

STREET SMART REGIONAL SAFETY CAMPAIGN WAVE 2<\/b><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n

Street Smart Campaign – a pedestrian and bicyclist safety awareness campaign.
<\/em> 
After a successful launch in Fall 2009 Street Smart returns this year to broaden the impact of educating and enforcing the laws that aim to enhance pedestrian and bicyclist safety.  Street Smart provides educational outreach for pedestrians, bicyclists, and drivers to raise awareness of the rules that protect our most vulnerable road users.  Beginning in May 2010 activities began to identify the problems and target locations in each jurisdiction through editorials, public safety announcements, and posted web content.  Maps, crash data, laws and information about the dangers of speeding and the financial impact of a crash will be promoted through the Street Smart campaign on www.DriveSafeBaltimore.com<\/a>.
 
Street Smart 2010 aims to provide street teams that canvas mixed-use neighborhoods adjacent to high intensity bicycle and pedestrian crash locations.  <\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
