{"id":171126731,"date":"2010-06-04T15:12:11","date_gmt":"2010-06-04T15:12:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=171126731"},"modified":"2010-06-04T15:12:11","modified_gmt":"2010-06-04T15:12:11","slug":"4k-for-cancer-makes-pit-stop-in-valley-on-cross-country-trek","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=171126731","title":{"rendered":"4K for Cancer makes pit stop in Valley on cross-country trek"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By DENISE DICK<br \/>\nTwenty-eight college students bike 4,000 miles over 63 days to raise funds, foster hope and spread awareness about cancer.<br \/>\nThe cyclists in the 4K for Cancer, mostly students at Johns Hopkins University, Maryland, started their journey Sunday from Baltimore.<br \/>\nThey stopped Thursday afternoon at Westminster Presbyterian Church in Boardman to eat snacks and dinner provided by church members and to spend the night.<br \/>\nThey\u2019ll wrap up their trek July 31 at San Francisco\u2019s Golden Gate Bridge.<br \/>\n<!--more--><br \/>\n.<br \/>\nJose Medina, 21, of Miami, and Kristine Casey, 22, of Bernardsville, N.J., serve as co-directors for this year\u2019s event. This marks Medina\u2019s first 4K and Casey\u2019s second.<br \/>\n\u201cMy mom is a Hodgkin\u2019s lymphoma survivor,\u201d Casey said of her<br \/>\ninvolvement.<br \/>\nTwo of Medina\u2019s close friends made the trip in 2008 and last year. Medina\u2019s grandmother died of a brain tumor, and a close relative died from breast cancer, he said.<br \/>\nFrank Riddle, a church member, said the church opened its doors to feed and house the cyclists four years ago and has continued it since.<br \/>\n\u201cWe enjoy having them here,\u201d he said. \u201cAll of our people in the church prepare different kinds of food.\u201d<br \/>\nWake-up time for cyclists is between 4:30 and 6 a.m., followed by packing up, breakfast and a gathering where cyclists announce whom they are dedicating that day\u2019s ride to.<br \/>\n\u201cMy adviser, Claire King, lost her son to leukemia when he was very young,\u201d Medina said. \u201cI dedicated today\u2019s ride to her son.\u201d<br \/>\nCyclists begin each day\u2019s ride with groups of between three and six members hitting the road in roughly five-minute intervals, he said.<br \/>\nEach day\u2019s ride stretches between 80 miles and 120 miles and lasts between five and six hours. From the Boardman church, the group was to leave today, headed to Cleveland.<br \/>\nThey spend each night at a church, school or YMCA-like facility.<br \/>\nThis year, Medina and Casey instituted a training regimen, trying to prepare for the arduous ride.<br \/>\n\u201cThe first week is the hardest,\u201d Casey said.<br \/>\nRiders get a little sore.
