Consider the timeliness of enjoying the simple pleasure of a bike ride:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Crude oil is spewing uncontrollably into the Gulf      creating <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2010\/04\/29\/us\/29spill.html?fta=y\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">a bona fide ecological disaster<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eia.doe.gov\/oil_gas\/petroleum\/data_publications\/wrgp\/mogas_home_page.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gas prices<\/a> are inexorably rising toward the three dollar      a gallon mark<\/li>\n<li>The First Lady\u2019s \u201c<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.letsmove.gov\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Let\u2019s Move<\/a>\u201d initiative begs for kids      to get back on their bikes and unplug themselves from their myriad      electronic devices<\/li>\n<li>Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood is tearing up the      country in support of livability \u2013 <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fastlane.dot.gov\/2010\/04\/what-we-know-about-bike-infrastructure-people-want-it.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">with bicycling at the core of his      message<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/politic365.com\/2010\/04\/30\/climate-change-legislation-faces-more-hurdles\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Climate<\/a> and transportation legislation remains      \u201cimminent\u201d (and long overdue) in the United States Congress<\/li>\n<li>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention just      launched<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/transportation\/default.htm\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> new recommendations<\/a> for improving health through transportation      policy\u2026totally new territory in Government collaboration<\/li>\n<li>And <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/resources\/reports\/acs_commuter_trends.php\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">more and more people<\/a> are, in fact, getting on their      bikes and riding.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>So let\u2019s celebrate!<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/programs\/bikemonth\/promo.php\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" title=\"league_bike_month_logo\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/blog\/\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2010\/04\/league_bike_month_logo.gif\" alt=\"league_bike_month_logo\" height=\"200\" width=\"200\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In the next 30 days, you\u2019ll see a new group of designated <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/programs\/bicyclefriendlyamerica\/communities\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bicycle Friendly Communities <\/a>announced (tomorrow, in fact); a testament to the commitment of Mayors and community leaders to making their communities better places to bike.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.physicalactivityplan.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">National Physical Activity Plan <\/a>will be launched, setting ambitious targets for getting people to bikes for short, every day trips.<\/p>\n<p>Bike to Work Week and Bike to Work Day (May 21) are fast approaching and will see unprecedented media coverage (my prediction\u2026).<\/p>\n<p>The competitive urge in all of us will be satisfied by the<a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amgentourofcalifornia.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Tour of California<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>A time for reflection comes May 19<sup>th<\/sup> with the annual <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/blog\/2010\/04\/ride-of-silence-worldwide\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ride of Silence<\/a>; hope and inspiration is the hallmark of the Ride 2 Recovery event from DC to Virginia Beach, when you can ride with recovering military veterans.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.imba.com\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">IMBA\u2019s<\/a> Mountain Bike Summit starts next week; <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.wilmapco.org\/DEBikeSummit\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Delaware<\/a> is hosting a <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bikeleague.org\/programs\/bicyclefriendlyamerica\/bicyclefriendlystate\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">state bike summit<\/a>\u2026<\/p>\n<p>So much to do!
