The Chicago Police
\nDepartment is teaming up with Lincoln
\nPark business owners and residents to give new mobility
\nto local police efforts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Lincoln Park
\nChamber of Commerce, along with the Clark Street Special Service Area, donated
\n18 mountain bikes to Chicago police this week. Police said the bikes
\nwill help them stay more visible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Sgt. Mike
\nNeckermann of Chicago police’s Central Command Group said the
\nbikes should hit the streets in a couple of weeks. He said the bicycles
\nwill go to officers in the 18th, 19th and 23rd districts, which stretch
\nfrom the Chicago River to Lawrence
\nAvenue .  The districts are bound by the North
\nBranch Chicago River to the west and the lakefront to the
\neast.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“It’s more of what
\nwe like to call a curb-to-curb approach,\u201d Neckermann said. \u201cIn a car,
\nyou’re somewhat limited as to your areas of patrol. Sometimes you’re boxed in in
\na car. You miss out on things you can see, smell,
\nwhatever.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Neckermann, who
\nestimated the department already uses about 500 bikes, said the new
\nbicycles will provide a welcome upgrade to officers already patrolling on
\ntwo wheels. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Clark Street SSA
\nDirector Bruce Longanecker Sr. said many business owners were looking for ways
\nto improve safety along the Lincoln
\nPark \u2019s Clark
\nStreet corridor. The commission came up
\nwith the idea of donating the bikes about six months ago.  <\/span>\u201cTalking to the police officers we found
\nthat the bikes that they have were cannibalized,” or put together from parts of
\nother bicycles, he said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Longanecker said
\nhe hopes the new bikes help police protect Lincoln Park homes and businesses.  “It’s
\nto make the street more inviting for the businesses and for the residents,” he
\nsaid.  <\/span>Cmdr. Ken Angarone said
\nbicycles also make police more mobile.  “A bike can move in and out of
\ntraffic,\u201d Angarone said. \u201cIf they have to, they can use the
\nsidewalk.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Angarone, who
\nheads the police department’s 18th District, said the bicycles also help break
\ndown physical barriers between police and those they protect.
\n <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\u201dMembers of the
\ncommunity have no problem speaking to an officer riding by on a bike,” Angarone
\nsaid.  “Sometimes they’ll get information on a crime trend or something
\nthat’s going on that they weren’t aware of.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The
\nextra bikes also help police cover more ground.  Angarone mentioned Oz
\nPark, at the corner of Lincoln and Webster avenues, as one place police can
\nbetter patrol on a bike.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A press release
\nfrom the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce said the donation was valued at
\n$25,000.  The money came from Lincoln Park SSA’s 2010 budget, which is
\ndrawn from the area’s property taxes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

“The commission
\nthat oversees Clark Street SSA wanted to do something to improve security,” said
\nLoren Dinneen, director of special projects for the Lincoln Park Chamber of
\nCommerce.  “(The police) have had a tremendous need for additional bikes,
\nso we were happy to donate them.”<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
