Martin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">,<br \/>\n<em>Jan 20, 2010<\/em><\/span><\/h3>\n<p style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt;\" class=\"MsoNormal\"><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Chicago Police<br \/>\nDepartment is teaming up with Lincoln<br \/>\nPark business owners and residents to give new mobility<br \/>\nto local police efforts. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The Lincoln Park<br \/>\nChamber of Commerce, along with the Clark Street Special Service Area, donated<br \/>\n18 mountain bikes to Chicago police this week. Police said the bikes<br \/>\nwill help them stay more visible.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Sgt. Mike<br \/>\nNeckermann of Chicago police&#8217;s Central Command Group said the<br \/>\nbikes should hit the streets in a couple of weeks.&nbsp;He said the bicycles<br \/>\nwill go&nbsp;to officers in the 18th, 19th and 23rd districts, which stretch<br \/>\nfrom the Chicago River to Lawrence<br \/>\nAvenue .&nbsp; The districts are bound by the North<br \/>\nBranch Chicago River to the west and the lakefront&nbsp;to the<br \/>\neast.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;It&#8217;s more of what<br \/>\nwe like to call a curb-to-curb approach,\u201d Neckermann said.&nbsp;\u201cIn a car,<br \/>\nyou&#8217;re somewhat limited as to your areas of patrol. Sometimes you&#8217;re boxed in in<br \/>\na car.&nbsp;You miss out on things you can see, smell,<br \/>\nwhatever.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Neckermann, who<br \/>\nestimated the department already uses about 500 bikes, said the new<br \/>\nbicycles&nbsp;will provide a welcome upgrade to officers already patrolling on<br \/>\ntwo wheels. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Clark Street SSA<br \/>\nDirector Bruce Longanecker Sr. said many business owners were looking for ways<br \/>\nto improve safety along the Lincoln<br \/>\nPark \u2019s Clark<br \/>\nStreet corridor.&nbsp;The&nbsp;commission came up<br \/>\nwith the idea of donating the bikes about six months ago.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>\u201cTalking to the police officers we found<br \/>\nthat the bikes that they have were cannibalized,&#8221; or put together from parts of<br \/>\nother bicycles, he said.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Longanecker said<br \/>\nhe hopes the new bikes help police protect Lincoln Park homes and businesses.&nbsp; &#8220;It&#8217;s<br \/>\nto make the street more inviting for the businesses and for the residents,&#8221; he<br \/>\nsaid.<span style=\"\">&nbsp; <\/span>Cmdr. Ken Angarone said<br \/>\nbicycles also&nbsp;make police more mobile.&nbsp; &#8220;A bike can move in and out of<br \/>\ntraffic,\u201d Angarone said. \u201cIf they have to, they can use the<br \/>\nsidewalk.\u201d<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">Angarone, who<br \/>\nheads the police department&#8217;s 18th District, said the bicycles also help break<br \/>\ndown physical barriers between police and those they protect.<br \/>\n&nbsp;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">\u201dMembers of the<br \/>\ncommunity have no problem speaking to an officer riding by on a bike,&#8221; Angarone<br \/>\nsaid.&nbsp; &#8220;Sometimes they&#8217;ll get information on a crime trend or something<br \/>\nthat&#8217;s going on that they weren&#8217;t aware of.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">The<br \/>\nextra&nbsp;bikes also help police cover more ground.&nbsp; Angarone mentioned Oz<br \/>\nPark, at the corner of Lincoln and Webster avenues, as one place police can<br \/>\nbetter patrol on a bike.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">A press release<br \/>\nfrom the Lincoln Park Chamber of Commerce said the donation was valued at<br \/>\n&#36;25,000.&nbsp; The money came from Lincoln Park SSA&#8217;s 2010 budget, which is<br \/>\ndrawn from the area&#8217;s property taxes.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 11pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: Times New Roman;\">&#8220;The commission<br \/>\nthat oversees Clark Street SSA wanted to do something to improve security,&#8221; said<br \/>\nLoren Dinneen, director of special projects for the Lincoln Park Chamber of<br \/>\nCommerce.&nbsp; &#8220;(The police) have had a tremendous need for additional bikes,<br \/>\nso we were happy to donate them.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/news.aspx?id=154087\">https:\/\/news.medill.northwestern.edu\/chicago\/news.aspx?id=154087<\/a>oldId.20100122113200409<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>by Luke X.
