The 2010 13th Annual One Less Car Smart Transportation and Bicycling Symposium in Annapolis will be a little different this year! The Symposium will be more inclusive covering many bicycle and pedestrian topics, as well as, presentations on smart commuting\/alternative transportation initiatives.\n<\/p>\n

\nAttendees will learn about the link that exists between our reliance on the automobile, climate change, public health concerns, land use planning, alternative transportation opportunities, livable communities and more.\n<\/p>\n

\nThis Annual Symposium is an outstanding opportunity for people to meet and share information with advocates, planners, state and local officials, and community leaders who want more bike lanes, better sidewalks, more trails, a statewide Complete Streets policy and access to a variety of modes of efficient transportation for everyone. The Symposium is the perfect setting to inform our state Delegates and Senators that Maryland communities need smart commuting opportunities and safe bicycle and pedestrian access to be fully sustainable and livable.\n<\/p>\n

\ndesign and construction of our transportation systems has a profound
\nimpact on the public’s health. These impacts are vast and range
\nfrom preventable deaths and injuries resulting from traffic crashes
\nto reduced opportunities for physical activity. <\/span><\/span>The
\npurpose of this presentation is to explore the inextricable link
\nbetween public health and transportation (bicycling etc.). Dr.
\nPollack’s comments will include a brief summary of the research
\nin this area, its implications for policy-making, in Maryland and the
\nU.S., and an emphasis on partnerships and collaboration as a way to
\nensure transportation and public health are considered together.<\/p>\n

\nSchool Program: Building transportation alternatives today for our

Safe
\nRoutes to School is a federally funded program that encourages
\nchildren in grades K-8, including children with disabilities, to walk
\nor bike to school. The possible impact of this program on Maryland’s
\nschool children can be profound. The more physically active school
\nage children become the less chance they have of becoming obese. It
\nalso helps combat Type I diabetes formally known as juvenile
\ndiabetes. It is a known fact that children that are physically active
\nbefore school are more alert and participate more in classroom
\nactivities. This presentation will give a brief history of the Safe
\nRoutes to School program and what accomplishments have been made in
\nMaryland.
