\nOne in five children will be obese by 2010. Children
\nshould be active at least one hour each day; only
\none-third of high-school students currently meet this
\ngoal. Schools can help meet this physical activity goal,
\nthrough physical education programs, active recess,
\nafter-school and other recreational activities. Education
\nfunding should be linked to all children achieving at
\nleast half of their daily recommended physical activity
\nat school, and over time should be linked to reductions
\nin childhood obesity rates.

\nDespite breakthroughs in medical science and a $1 trillion
\nincrease in annual health care spending over the past decade,
\nAmerica is losing ground relative to other countries when
\nit comes to health. Astronomical medical bills strain family
\nand government budgets and threaten America\u2019s global
\ncompetitiveness. Health care spending consumes about
\n16 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), much
\nmore than in any other industrialized nation, and is expected
\nto climb to over 20 percent of GDP by 2018. The costs of
\nmedical care and insurance are now out of reach for many
\nAmerican households, pushing some families into bankruptcy,
\ndraining businesses, reducing employment and severely
\nstraining public budgets.

\nMeanwhile, the United States slipped from
\n14th among industrialized countries in life expectancy at birth
\nin 1980 to 23rd by 2004. We need to look beyond medical
\ncare to other factors that can improve America\u2019s health.<\/em><\/p>\n
