Children<br \/>\nshould be active at least one hour each day; only<br \/>\none-third of high-school students currently meet this<br \/>\ngoal. Schools can help meet this physical activity goal,<br \/>\nthrough physical education programs, active recess,<br \/>\nafter-school and other recreational activities. Education<br \/>\nfunding should be linked to all children achieving at<br \/>\nleast half of their daily recommended physical activity<br \/>\nat school, and over time should be linked to reductions<br \/>\nin childhood obesity rates.<br \/>\n<br \/>&#8230;<br \/>\nDespite breakthroughs in medical science and a &#36;1 trillion<br \/>\nincrease in annual health care spending over the past decade,<br \/>\nAmerica is losing ground relative to other countries when<br \/>\nit comes to health. Astronomical medical bills strain family<br \/>\nand government budgets and threaten America\u2019s global<br \/>\ncompetitiveness. Health care spending consumes about<br \/>\n16 percent of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP), much<br \/>\nmore than in any other industrialized nation, and is expected<br \/>\nto climb to over 20 percent of GDP by 2018. The costs of<br \/>\nmedical care and insurance are now out of reach for many<br \/>\nAmerican households, pushing some families into bankruptcy,<br \/>\ndraining businesses, reducing employment and severely<br \/>\nstraining public budgets.<br \/>\n<br \/>&#8230;<br \/>\nMeanwhile, the United States slipped from<br \/>\n14th among industrialized countries in life expectancy at birth<br \/>\nin 1980 to 23rd by 2004.
