{"id":151346757,"date":"2009-10-18T16:45:57","date_gmt":"2009-10-18T16:45:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=151346757"},"modified":"2009-10-18T16:45:57","modified_gmt":"2009-10-18T16:45:57","slug":"fuzzy-dice-1-cyclists-0","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wp.baltimorespokes.org\/?p=151346757","title":{"rendered":"Fuzzy Dice 1, Cyclists 0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"entry\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-2999\" title=\"Red fuzzy dice\" src=\"https:\/\/www.m-bike.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2009\/10\/800px-Dice_02138-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"Red fuzzy dice\" width=\"180\" height=\"135\" \/><br \/><a title=\"Senate Bill 276\" href=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2009-SB-0276\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate Bill 276<\/a>, aka the Fuzzy Dice Bill, passed the Michigan Senate unanimously.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a title=\"Detroit News\" href=\"https:\/\/www.detnews.com\/article\/20091014\/POLITICS02\/910140407\/1414\/METRO05\/State-Senate--Hang-those-fuzzy-dice\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit News<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">Fuzzy dice hanging from the rearview mirror would no longer be outlawed under a bill that won passage in the Senate today.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">The chamber voted unanimously for a measure that strikes down a law that says items dangling from the rearview mirror are a no-no.<\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cWe understand there are many distractions in cars, such as cell phones or GPS systems, but we did not feel that a rosary or air freshener was in the same league,\u201d said Sen. Ron Jelinek, R-Three Oaks, sponsor of the bill. \u201cThis will help make it legal to do what thousands of Michigan residents already do \u2014 hang a memento from their mirror.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Great job!<\/p>\n<p>Now let\u2019s look at some bicycle safety bills <strong>the Michigan Senate has not passed or voted on<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a title=\"Senate Bill 529\" href=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2009-SB-0529\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate Bills 529<\/a> &amp; <a title=\"Senate Bill 530\" href=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2009-SB-0530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">530<\/a> which \u201cenhance penalties for moving violations causing physical injury or death to bicyclists and other vulnerable roadway users\u201d according to the <a title=\"LMB\" href=\"https:\/\/www.lmb.org\/AdvocacyCenter.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">League of Michigan Bicyclists<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><a title=\"Senate Bill 531\" href=\"https:\/\/legislature.mi.gov\/doc.aspx?2009-SB-0531\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Senate Bill 531<\/a> which stipulates that driver education \u201cshall include information concerning the laws pertaining to bicycles and shall emphasize awareness of the operation of bicycles on the streets, roads, and highways of this state.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Bicycle advocates in the state of Washington are also pursuing a Vulnerable User Bill. (<a title=\"Seattle P-I\" href=\"https:\/\/blog.seattlepi.com\/transportation\/archives\/181971.asp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle PI<\/a> via <a title=\"How We Drive\" href=\"https:\/\/www.howwedrive.com\/2009\/10\/15\/the-questions-we-should-ask\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How We Drive<\/a>)<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding-left: 30px;\">Advocates for a new law argue that families of those killed or maimed deserve greater sense of justice than a traffic ticket brings. However, a conviction for negligent driving doesn\u2019t carry much steeper punishment. Typically, a first-time offender gets probation or a deferred sentence.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin: 0px 0px 15px; padding-left: 30px;\">\u201cDo they need an automatic license suspension or do they need driver retraining. These are the questions that we should ask,\u201d Hiller said.
