Bike parking at Artscape was a huge success for its first
\nyear.  An estimated 600 bikes<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

were parked at the facility over the weekend!  Many thanks to Mark Counselman<\/span><\/b> who managed the bike
\nparking and all the volunteers that helped out!<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Bob Moore Memorial Moonlight
\nMadness<\/span><\/b> ride brought out 200 cyclists on Thursday, July 30th<\/sup>. 
\nAside from a couple wrecks and flats, a great time was had by all.  It was
\ngreat to see that many bikes rolling up
\n Charles St , and still sharing the road
\nwith cars.   <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Last week, Mr. Jack
\nYates<\/span><\/b> was cycling Maryland
\n Avenue when he was struck and killed by a
\nright-turning box truck.   The truck did not stop and the police are
\nstill looking for the driver as the investigation is on-going.  Anyone
\nwith information is urged to call 410-396-2100. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

In memory of Mr. Yates, members of Baltimore \u2019s
\ncycling community stepped up and installed a \u201cghost
\nbike<\/span><\/span><\/a>\u201d<\/span><\/b> at the corner of
\n Lafayette and
\n Maryland Avenue .  Ghost bikes are a
\nworldwide movement aimed at paying tribute to fallen cyclists and drawing
\nattention to greater road safety<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Baltimore Metropolitan Council has completed the BICYCLE COMMUTER RESOURCE GUIDE<\/span><\/span><\/b> for the
\nBaltimore Region.  The guide contains an array of information road rules,
\noutfitting your bike, and where to ride.  The guide also contains
\ninformation for employers on how to encourage employees to commute by
\nbike.  The guide is available from DOT Planning (410-396-6856) and the Baltimore
\nMetropolitan Council (410-732-0500).  The guide will also be available
\nonline.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

BIKE INFRASTRUCTURE<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New Bike Parking \u2013 <\/span><\/span><\/b>The Department of
\nTransportation\u2019s Maintenance Division has installed a total of 107 bike racks<\/span><\/b> this year!  The
\ncommunities of Highlandtown, Belair-Edison, Waverley ,
\nRemington and Hamilton
\nare some of the areas where the new racks are installed.  To request a

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New Bike Routes <\/span><\/span><\/b>are being planned for Bolton
\nHill, Reservoir Hill and Lake
\n Avenue .  These routes will connect existing
\nand proposed bike routes will provide safer corridors for cyclists.  <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Mayor\u2019s Bicycle Advisory Committee <\/span><\/b>meets Tuesday,
\nAugust 18th<\/sup> at 6pm in the Recreation and Parks HQ (
\n 2600 Madison Avenue ). <\/p>\n

We\u2019ll be discussing police cooperation, the new bike routes and community
\nmeetings for the Southeast\/Park Heights bike network.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Tour du Port<\/span><\/span><\/b>,
\n Baltimore ‘s Premier Bicycle Event, takes
\nplace October 4th. Join thousands of riders at the
\n Canton Waterfront
\n Park to kick off the 16th
\nAnnual Tour du Port. Routes range from 12 to a new 1\/2 century 50 mile ride!
\nThe route travels through over twelve historic neighborhoods, waterfront areas
\nand parks. This fully supported tour includes lunch, refreshments at rest
\nstops, map and sag and a post-ride celebration at Tour’s end. This event is One
\nLess Car’s Annual Fundraiser! All fees go directly to advancing the programs and
\nadvocacy efforts of One Less Car, a non-profit dedicated to walking, bicycling
\nand mass transit in Maryland .

\nLess Car sponsors the Second Fall Bicycle Forum <\/span><\/span><\/b><\/strong>on Wednesday
\nOctober 7, 2009 at Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab (JHAPL) at the
\nintersection of Route #29 and Gorman
\n Road in Laurel ,
\n Maryland . Over 80 Bike
\nAdvocates\/Planners\/Elected Officials attended this well received Forum last
\nyear. Attend this Forum to find how to make and keep Maryland Bike Friendly.
\nThis is an important opportunity to inform leaders about your concerns and
\nideas! Let us know what you think should be a 2010 legislative priority. We are
\nexpecting advocacy groups from many counties all over the state: Howard,
\n Montgomery , Prince George ,
\nAnne Arundel, Baltimore , Frederick ,
\nSt. Mary, Baltimore
\n City and Washington
\n DC to attend and show\/tell what
\nthey are doing in their areas. Additionally, we will discuss bike legislation
\nfor the 2010 Annapolis Session. Mark you calendars and plan to attend.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n
