 The Bicycle Friendly State program has again ranked all 50
\nstates on their bike-friendliness. Maryland<\/span><\/b> ranked 16th<\/span><\/b> for 2009. You can see the overall
\nresults of the ranking, including by category here<\/a>.
\nThe rankings are based on overall scores to the ranking questionnaire<\/a>
\nthat was sent to your State
\nBike Coordinator<\/a>. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The overall scoring was very close, with the separation of
\nmany states being the difference of just a few items. Passage of key
\nlegislation, updated traffic code, increased education programs or accurate
\nfunding reporting can lead to a significant impact on your state\u2019s
\nranking.  Our hope is that this brief bit of feedback can serve as a
\nchecklist on to help you improve your ranking as you continue to work with your
\nDepartment of Transportation and state legislature. In partnership with Bikes
\nBelong we have assisted the National Conference of State Legislators in
\ncreating Encouraging
\nBicycling and Walking: The State Legislative Role.<\/a> Please forward this link
\nalong to your state representatives and their staff. If you would like
\nhard-copies to put in the hands of your representatives, please let me know,
\nthough quantities are limited. <\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New for this year were our first
\n Bicycle Friendly
\n State awards. Modeled
\nafter our Bicycle Friendly Community awards programs, the additional
\napplication offers an addendum to the ranking questionnaire, and allows states
\nto further explain their policies and programs that make their state great
\nplaces for bicycling. Four states have been awarded the coveted designation and
\ntwo states received an honorable mention \u2013 Washington
\n(Silver), Wisconsin (Silver),
\n Arizona (Bronze), Minnesota
\n(Bronze), Delaware (Honorable Mention) and
\n Maryland (Honorable
\nMention). Applications for the award will be accepted annually each Spring. The 2010 deadline is March 12.<\/span><\/b><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Please encourage your State
\nBike Coordinator<\/a> to apply for this designation in addition to offering your
\nassistance with the application. We find the
\nbest, most complete applications and the most Bicycle friendly States are those
\nwhere all parties work together to fill it out. <\/span><\/i>If you have any
