Having their town designated one<br \/>\nof the 50-plus time stations draws even more excitement. &nbsp;The most<br \/>\ndedicated fans&nbsp;often stay up through the night to assemble in impromptu<br \/>\nvillages at&nbsp;roadsides to watch and cheer as the racers and their support<br \/>\ncrews ride by at their steady paces. It&#8217;s a big show &#8211; support cars with<br \/>\nflashing beacons, huge RV&#8217;s, and even a peloton of scooters, officials, and<br \/>\nmotorcycles &nbsp;&#8220;How can anyone ride all&nbsp;the way across the USA on a<br \/>\nbike?&#8221; is the most asked question &#8220;and in 8 &nbsp;days?&#8221;<br \/>For 2009, Mt Airy<br \/>\nBicycles, a lifelong supporter of the event, will again not only have the ride<br \/>\npass by their shop; they will serve as an official time<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/bike123.com\/Clip%20Art\/Jailer.jpg\" height=\"166\" width=\"167\" alt=\"image\" style=\"float: right; border: 0px;\" \/>&nbsp;station and the ONLY official RAAM penalty box on the entire<br \/>\n2900-mile route. &nbsp; Any racer with a penalty along the route must sit out<br \/>\nfor a certain time.&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Because the shop is a platinum level designated<br \/>\ntest-ride center for many of the best bike, trike, and tandem brands, we made<br \/>\nsure our smooth, state-bike-route-designated shoulders are wider than the<br \/>\ntraffic lanes!<\/p>\n<p>This is a great place to watch the race.&nbsp; Our large,<br \/>\ngrassy yard will be an ideal place to pitch a tent and relax between racers<br \/>\npassing through. Plenty of RV parking is available as well. The atmosphere is a<br \/>\nlocal version of the hillsides of France during LeTour, only our party lasts a<br \/>\nweek not just a few hours! Experts agree the RAAM is a far tougher event! You<br \/>\ncan&nbsp;expect to see cyclists coming through during the last week of June.<br \/>\n&nbsp;The shop will be&nbsp;providing round-the-clock snacks and comfort<br \/>\namenities for racers,&nbsp;crews, and fans.<\/p>\n<p>Last year, riders, fans, and<br \/>\ncrews from all over the planet agreed this was one of the most interesting stops<br \/>\never&#8230;..<br \/>It is like the grandstand at LeMans or the Derby- it&#8217;s the start of<br \/>\nthe sprint and when all the stops got pulled Mt Airy fans saw&nbsp;Slovenia&#8217;s<br \/>\nJure Robic hand carried off his bike seat, into a couch in the RV, and back on<br \/>\nthe bike after &#8216;doing his time&#8217;<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana;\">While he was in the bus, his<br \/>\nrestless crew members jumped on the&nbsp;<a rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.conferencebike.com\/\">7-seat Conference<br \/>\nBike<\/a>&nbsp; and took it up the highway and back.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana;\">Though the weary Slovenian Army<br \/>\nofficer, Robic, could hardly stand, he pedaled off into the morning mist and was<br \/>\ncrowned the winner in Annapolis that afternoon- and the ONLY&nbsp;4-time winner<br \/>\nin RAAM history.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>The next morning Robic&#8217;s<br \/>\nnow-famous SRAM RED Scott bike was in our shop where it resides and will be on<br \/>\ndisplay.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>Another famous RAAM bike will<br \/>\nbe on display as well-the 1985 Veltec-Boyer Vitus Carbone used by Jonathan Boyer<br \/>\nto win the RAAM from California to Atlantic City that year. With all due respect<br \/>\nto Ultramarathon cyclists like Lon Haldeman, Michael Shermer, Casey Patterson,<br \/>\nand &#8217;85 runner-up Mike Secrest (whom Boyer edged out by a nose&#8217; of just hours)<br \/>\nBoyer wanted to show that a regular road and track racer could go the<br \/>\ndistance.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p class=\"MsoNormal\" style=\"margin: 0in 0in 0pt; font-size: 14pt; font-family: 'Times New Roman';\"><b><span style=\"font-size: 12pt; font-family: Verdana;\"><br \/>Mt Airy&#8217;s Larry Black, had<br \/>\nknown Boyer and some friends from his company for a few years and was able to<br \/>\nget the winning bike shortly after the event. Nearly 20 years later Boyer&#8217;s<br \/>\nskinsuit turned up in California and came out to reunite with the bike.
